Essay Topic A: Tell us your story. What unique opportunities or challenges have you experienced throughout your high school career that have shaped who you are today?
Growing up in Waco Texas, I have experienced a lot that the average person is not prone to. I experienced a lot of trauma at the tender age of five. Due to my challenges in life, I decided to not become a stereotype within my community. I decided to become more than my challenges and pursue the love of football. This is my story.
I grew up in east Waco with my mom, brother, sister, and my mom’s immediate family. My mom, who is an African-American woman raised me, a biracial male, in a predominantly black community. Because of my ethnic background being both African-American and Hispanic, a few of my community members saw me as an outcast. Because of this, I faced a lot of bullying from my peers. Some would say, because of my Hispanic background, I would never achieve my dream of being a great football player. Being a young man, with no father figure, caused me to have to face these challenges on my own. My dad was absent during the important stages of my life. I never had him as guidance. Because of this, I was influenced by my community. East Waco was not the ideal place to raise a child. Growing up in what is known as the “projects,” I experienced a lot of things a child is supposed to be shielded from such as drugs, murder, and violence. Due to this, I was sent to live with my biological father who decided to homeschool me. During my time with him, he noticed my love of football and enrolled me into a junior football team. During my time with my team, I excelled in football. While playing football, I felt a sense of relief knowing that I could do what I loved. I became a leader and an inspiration to my teammates. I accomplished a lot on the field and became the star runningback. Because of my skills, I was noticed by a lot of division one colleges. I ended up earning over a hundred scholarships. However, little did I know, my dreams would be crushed. Because of the people I trusted, I ended up being put into the system during my junior year of being homeschooled. During my incarceration, I was able to reflect on my life and how I could straighten up and achieve my goals. Once I was released from prison, I decided to have kids of my own and was working a nine to five, however, my dreams were still lingering on my mind. I decided that I wanted to show my kids that they could become more than their circumstances and chase their dreams. At the age of twenty-seven, I decided to put my fears to the side and continue my education and chase my dreams of becoming a professional football player. I want to prove to my children and my community that no matter the circumstances you face in life and no matter the environment you grew up in, you can become anything you want.
