*I have started this paper, but I am having trouble finishing it. The professor has had us submit the essays build up and progress throughout the semester; therefore, it must follow this topic and continue off this essay. The already completed portion can be changed and tweaked, but the thesis remains the same.*
The paper’s premise is as follows: As a member of a key organization/club at Middlesex College, you just heard about a research grant in your field (the specific field of your paper topic). Your goal is to create a plan of action explaining your position, your key reasoning, and how you would solve the issue if awarded the grant.
Potential topics (this is by no means exhaustive, but these are some of the topics students explored last semester. These range from general/more common to highly specific and nuanced issues):
Banning animal testing/dismantling zoos/raising penalties on animal abuse
Climate change (specific focuses include plastic pollution, green energy, and overfishing)
Food banks in low-income communities
Tax choice (choosing where our tax dollars go)
Voter laws (identification and rights, electoral college vs popular vote, etc.)
Development of certain AI technologies (robotic spaceflight, robots in surgery, etc.)
Free college tuition/student loan forgiveness
NOTE: You can continue with your topic from Essay #1 (on addiction) if you would like. Just realize that this will require editing and a renewed focus on the proposal portion of this assignment. That is, you will not be writing just to defend a position but instead to focus on proposing a solution, which will make up the majority of your essay.
Whatever you choose, your topic should focus on a key issue in society that is researchable, argumentative, and able to be developed into a full paper in which you explore a solution to said issue. Something too vague like “dreams” is too broad and has no direction. There are a few specific topics that are restricted for this paper (I cover reasoning why in the video, so make sure you give that a listen).
Restricted topics: Covid-19, abortion, paying college athletes
When thinking about your proposal topics, consider the following:
What Exists
Why is this still a problem?
Have other solutions been tried? Why haven’t they worked?
Consider what you’ve already written/researched and use that as your foundation.
Time & Money
How far into the future do you see this issue going?
How do other time-related elements (technology, economy, field direction) impact this?
Is money in the way of the solution being enacted? If so, how can this be rectified?
Other Obstacles
What else potentially lies in the way of this solution?
Who is in support of this issue? Who is against it? What about other audiences?
