The Big 8 Identity Markers are by no means all of the markers for identity and identity construction. They are a good way to begin to think about identity and the performance of identity. For instance, if one identifies as part of a certain religion, that becomes part one’s identity. Now performing or showing this aspect of self works to reify one’s own belief of self and also indicates it to the outside world. This, along with other identity markers, can be displayed in many ways and for many reasons. For instance, if one identifies as Buddhist, one might dress a certain way, have a statue displayed of Buddha, or write a blog about it. Groups with whom people identity (or absolutely do not identify) are important aspects of one’s identity. Identities are complicated and made up of many parts. Often one or more aspects of identity will take front and center (in terms of performance) depending on the context or situation. For example, when I am in front of a class, the teacher part of my identity is spotlighted. When I take my son out for a special lunch, the father part of my identity might take over. Think about in your own experience–do you behave the same, speak the same, dress the same all the time? Would you have the same conversation (perhaps about your summer) with your friends as you would with your grandparents or a prospective employer? Who we are is not static or constant. Our experiences every day change the way we think about the world and how we see ourselves. The perceived audiences we encounter effect how we perform our identities.
