Guidelines:
Format your answer in standard APA format with three exceptions: 1) you do NOT need a cover page; 2) key terms from the readings that you are trying to emphasize should be bolded; 3) Provide in-text citations for all readings and full citation for any source you cover that is NOT from the readings I’ve given you in this class. This means you should provide a full citation for the poll you’re using but you do not need a full citation for the readings I’ve given you.
There is no minimum word count for this answer. The preferred maximum is 10 pages double-spaced including any tables and references (meaning it doesn’t have to be this long but please don’t make it longer). Give me what you need to answer the question.
Tips:
1) Think about the tools we talked about for gauging the quality of a poll. You should use those tools in your evaluation.
2) Find me something that interests you and talk about it in a way that can engage you while showing me what you have learned. If you can find ways to enjoy writing your answer, I’m more likely to enjoy reading it. A casual writing style with memes and jokes is fine here (but I will judge you if they’re bad).
3) Quality is better than quantity for your answers. Show me you know in a concise manner. Show me how an informed member of the public thinks about the information you’ve found =)
This question consists of multiple parts. Make sure you answer and label each part of the question in the same way it is laid out here.
a) Poll Access-10 Points
Find a poll online (I recommend the Pew Research Center or one of the prominent news organizations, but you can pull from wherever you like provided you can use it to answer the information below.) Credit for this portion will be given for providing a link or file upload of the poll. Your choice, but I must have easy access to all the information you use to answer the questions below.
b) Background- 10 Points
Provide a brief background of the poll. What is it trying to learn?
c) Quality Assessment- 30 Points
Describe the quality of the poll. What sampling approach does it use? How effective is it at doing so? What sort of questions does it use? Are they well written?
d) Results Interpretation-30 Points
Interpret the poll’s results at a glance. What are your first takeaways from the findings? Show me how you reach this answer.
e) Application x1-60 Points
Extend the interpretation to it’s larger implications. Use one or more of the readings from this course to talk about how that poll contributes to our larger world. You should draw on some the readings and/or your pre-existing knowledge of communication theory (political, organizational, social, etc.) to support your analysis. A good answer for this portion will cite 1-3 non textbook references from weeks 1-3 of the course.
f) Application x2-60 Points
Take your answers from answer e and apply them to one of the four aspects below:
Interpersonal Relationships (any kind)
Media and Journalism (any field)
Political Behavior (any type)
Public Relations (any industry)
A good answer from this portion will lean on your interests in this course or other courses you’ve taken. As with section e, cite at least 1-3 non-textbook references. For this answer, those references do not need to be from this course.
