Point Value: 50 Points Due Date: See syllabus
Overview:
Professional and academic success requires a strong understanding of rhetoric. In most
work and class situations, your success will depend on your ability to clearly
communicate and influence your audiences. An important part of audience awareness is
recognizing who the reader will respect and what specific choices will make the reader
more likely to trust the writer.
Assignment:
Create a PowerPoint in which you choose online news article and analyze how this piece
builds trust with its intended audience.
Structure/Analysis:
The first slide will give the title of the article, its author (if known), and a brief summary.
The second slide will discuss the audience; for example, you might discuss questions of
age, political association, and income level. The third through tenth slides will then
provide examples of how the news article has been designed to appeal to this audience.
What rhetorical choices from this article seem designed to appeal to this audience?
Example Topics:
For this PowerPoint, you might examine a news site like Fox News and evaluate how
they appeal to conservative audiences. What kinds of language do they use? How are
their stories biased for older, conservative readers? For another example, you could use
something like MSNBC. What rhetorical choices make their articles seem more
trustworthy to liberal audiences? If you found a news story on MSNBC, how are their
stories biased for older, liberal readers?
Purpose:
The goal for this assignment is to help you explicitly consider how writers create trust
and credibility with different groups. Remember, ethos/credibility isn’t an objective trait.
Trustworthiness depends on the audience, which is one reason why some readers will
actually look at experts (individuals who are trained or experienced in a field) and view
them as less reliable. While this might be irrational, it is still how these groups behave.
Requirements:
10-slide PowerPoint
Assessment:
This presentation will be assessed based on its adherence to the prompt, analysis,
structure, specificity, and mechanics.
Tips:
1. Choose something interesting.
2. Choose something related to your major.
3. Have your instructor review your work.
