Life-Span Psychology – Assignment #3
DIRECTIONS:
For the purpose of this paper, examine ALL STAGES OF YOUR LIFE. Some of you might not know very
much about your infancy and/or do not have anyone to ask regarding this part of your life. If this is the
case, find a concept that you think could have happened to you during your first 2 years of life. If you
are not currently in middle or late adulthood, find a concept that you think will apply to you and your
life in the future.
For Chapter 17 (Death, Dying & Grieving) find a concept that is important to you.
Review your life and apply ONE concept from EACH of the following periods of life, listed in the Chapters
below. Therefore, you will have a total of 8 concepts to apply to yourself.
1. INFANCY (First 2 Years)
2. EARLY CHILDHOOD (2 – 5 Years)
3. MIDDLE TO LATE CHILDHOOD (5 – 12 Years)
4. ADOLESCENCE (12 – 20 Years)
5. EARLY ADULTHOOD (20 – 40 Years)
6. MIDDLE ADULTHOOD (40 – 60 Years)
7. LATE ADULTHOOD (60 Years and Beyond)
8. DEATH, DYING AND GRIEVING
Please put the Concept you are defining and applying in Bold and Underline.
GUIDELINES:
– Your assignment must be typed and double-spaced
– Approximately 2 – 5 pages in length (these are guidelines, not hard limits)
– Although this is not an essay (no need for a cover page, introduction or conclusion) it is still a
writing assignment, so please use complete sentences.
– Please label and number each age period. You should have a separate paragraph for each.
– You should first define/describe your concept, and then discuss how it applies to your life.
– Make sure to proof-read and spellcheck your assignment
– You are encouraged to send me drafts via email so I can give you feedback
– If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask!
EXAMPLE:
On the back of this paper I have provided an example which covers 3 age ranges (remember, for your
assignment you will cover all 8 sections listed above). Additionally, your paper should be double-spaced
1. INFANCY – Language Development (First Word): Infants develop language rapidly across the first
few years of life (Chp.3) with the first word typically being spoken at around 13 months of age. First
words spoken are usually nouns, which is exactly what mine was. In talking to my Mom, I spoke my first
word shortly after my first birthday (so around 12 months) and my first word was ‘car.’ According to my
Mom, anytime I saw a car I would point at it and say ‘car!’ excitedly, and would often spend time
standing at the window in the living room pointing and saying car anytime I saw one drive by our house.
My experience was very similar to what has been described as typical, my first word was a noun and was
spoken at approximately 13 months.
2. ADOLESCENCE – Top Dog Phenomenon: The top dog phenomenon is something commonly
experienced by adolescents who are transitioning from one school to another (Chp.9). Going from being
the oldest, smartest and most powerful to the youngest, smallest and least powerful can be a difficult
transition for many. I experienced this when leaving Junior High for High School, but I think it was worse
when I went from Elementary School to Junior High. My Elementary was K – 6th grade, and was small
enough that I knew everyone in the 6th grade and many students in the 5th grade as well. I was popular
and one of the best students in school, and felt very comfortable in my environment. When I moved to
Junior High, everything completely changed. The size of the school was very intimidating to me, and I
got lost several times in the first few weeks. It was the first time that I had different periods with
different teachers in different classrooms, and that made things feel much less personal to me. Many of
my friends from Elementary School were around, but there were *so many* strangers that I never felt
fully comfortable. It eventually got better, but those first few months in particular were very difficult for
me, which is exactly what would be predicted by the top-dog phenomenon.
3. LATE ADULTHOOD – Volunteering: Although I am not in late adulthood yet, one of the topics that
really appeals to me is the idea of volunteering. The textbook (Chp.16) notes that elders contribute a
huge amount of volunteer work every year to our communities, and that it is an all-around beneficial
arrangement: elders benefit from staying active and our communities benefit from having free labor.
This appeals to me because I have had the opportunity to volunteer a few times as a teenager and
young adult, but never as much as I would have liked. The place I volunteered the longest was an animal
shelter where I would volunteer every week for around 8 months. Eventually, I was so busy with school
and work that I simply did not have enough time to volunteer any longer and had to quit. Ever since
then, I have wanted to volunteer more but just cannot seem to find the time. So thinking of late
adulthood when I will be retired (hopefully!) and will have a lot more free time, I think that sounds like the perfect time to volunteer in my community.
