Overview
For AT2 short report #4 you are required to provide responses to four questions that focus on content covered during weeks 7 and 8 (questions listed below). There are 4 questions, each worth 5 marks. Presentation (e.g., spelling, grammar, clarity, accuracy of referencing, and adherence to word limits / formatting requirements) is also worth 5 marks. We encourage you to read a number of sources, then put them aside and draft a response in your own words, as this will help your learning and develop your thinking. In preparing your report you should carefully reference any materials that you cite within your report. As a guide, your answers to the four questions could be
adequately covered by drawing on 1–2 key texts (i.e., textbooks including your Thomas et al. (2015) text or peer-reviewed scientific articles).

Questions to be answered
As a researcher, you have decided to conduct a qualitative study exploring what barriers and motivators influence university student’s participation in organised sport.

1. Why would qualitative research be useful to answer this question? Provide two (2) potential interview questions that would be useful in this study to obtain data in a focus group of university students. (5 marks)

2. Once you have collected the data for this study, researchers must make ‘meaning’ from the data. The first stage in this process is to conduct ‘data reduction’. Briefly explain what you, as a researcher, would do in this stage? (5 marks)

3. In the example completed in the week 8 seminar, coding of the data was undertaken. Explain what the coding process involves and why it is necessary to complete. (5 marks)

4. Qualitative researchers must ensure trustworthiness of their data. One method of providing evidence that a study is ‘trustworthy’ is through triangulation. Explain how you might use triangulation to provide evidence that a study is trustworthy. (5 marks)
