Sociologist Patricia Hill Collins (2015) defined the intersectionality of diversity as the distinctive social, physical, and mental characteristic that make people unique. Collins (2015) furthered implied that this is a phenomenon that is shaped by race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nation, ability, and age; and that unfortunately, this phenomenon can lead to social inequalities. I believe that social and political pressure, regulations, and the opening of trade barriers have led to the points of intersection for Diversity, Cultural Awareness, and Globalization. Nelson & Quick (2019) stated that “Social and political upheavals have led organizations to change the way they conduct business as a result of thinking globally” (p.17). Over the past 60 years, social pressure has influenced organizations to think outside the box. For example, Kenneth T. Walsh (2010) wrote that the 1960s saw more women entering the workplace (usnews.com). As more women enter the workplace, they gained financial power albeit they were earning 40 percent less than their male counterpart; however, with their newly founded financial power, businesses started to compete to win them over. In addition, the 1960s saw the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited workplace discrimination (Nelson & Quick 2019). Additionally, Nelson & Quick (2019) credited “The opening of trade barriers is a third issue that affects organizations competing in a global economy” (p. 17). The workplace is profoundly changed by the impact of regulations such the Civil Rights Act of 1964. One noticeable impact is the increased of the financial power of women and other minority groups. Women and minority group new financial powers have become a forced that cannot be ignored; next Nelson & Quick (2019), suggested that “Globalization is driven by the spread of economic logics … [that] can be viewed as both opportunities and threat” (p.16). Finally, the social and political changes such as the LGBT movement, the generational shift, and the “ability diversity” Nelson & Quick (2019, p. 25), all have impacted the workplace. Managers must become aware of how their actions and how their actions are influencing others in the organization. I chose these points of intersection because I have benefitted from them. When I was on activity duty, I was stationed in countries where I had to work with the local nationals. To get things done, building trust, respect, and understanding was essential. Diversity became even more necessary when I was on a ship. On a ship, the Captain made everyone felt like they belong, even though, we have people from all walks of life. On board, w respected one another. We all depend on each other – it was human capital at its best. The benefits that diversity can be bring into an organization is immeasurable. “A more diverse workforce can draw on wider experiences to better understand the needs of your customers and deliver a higher standard of service,” (McHugh, 2020). Not only a higher standard of service but also different ways of thinking about how to make for a better work environment. According to our text globalization “is driven by the spread of economic logics centered on freeing, opening, deregulating, and privatizing economies to attract investment as well as technological innovations that are revolutionizing communication,” (Nelson et. al, 2019). Creating a work environment that is inclusive is imperative. “Creating an inclusive environment that embraces and welcomes all employees enables them to bring their diverse knowledge and skills to the table. Claiming to be diverse isn’t enough. Be proactive through assessments, training and strategic recruiting efforts to diversify and improve workforce engagement,” (Burroughs, 2018). “Awareness of cultural differences is particularly important when it comes to nonverbal communication because some nonverbal signals mean very different things in different cultures,” (Nelson et. al, 2019). An organization must take the necessary steps to train all employees. “One gateway through the barrier of diversity is increasing cultural awareness and sensitivity. We’ll dive into the company’s involvement with diversity efforts and lastly if they effectively communicate with customers. Both members will proofread, edit, and make necessary revisions.
