This week’s assignment consists of 3 separate tasks with submission of 3 separate items: creating learning objectives, developing a risk management plan, and conducting a cost-benefit analysis.
Task 1 – Creating Learning Objectives
Learning objectives are statements that define the goals or objectives of a specific curriculum, course, lesson, or action that the learner will acquire. Creating well-thought-out learning objectives is important to the development of your educational intervention. You will use these objectives to guide the intervention’s content.
Read SMART Goals: A How to Guide from the University of California.
Develop 3-4 SMART learning objectives detailing the knowledge, skills, or behaviors that the target population will acquire (need to know) from the educational intervention that you are developing.
For each objective, include the method of evaluation (i.e., how are you going to measure the change?). How will you determine that the objective has been met?
Note: The objectives should be short-range objectives rather than long-range objectives, and they are regarding the patients’ understanding of the education material. For example, an objective involving reduction of A1C, weight loss, or reduction of drinking (alcohol) are all long-range objectives and cannot be validated within the time frame of your practicum. But short-range objectives in which patients show their comprehension of the education material can be validated and are the type of objectives you want for your project. 6-12 weeks
Define the method you will be using for determining whether patients meet the learning objectives. Patient achievement of the learning objectives is the basis for evaluating the effectiveness of the education intervention. Consider using any of the following methods or a combination of these methods to determine whether patients have accomplished the objectives.
Teach-back method: Have the patients restate acquired learning in their own words. (This is especially helpful in determining whether you need to involve a medically trained interpreter for patients who may have a language barrier. Even though the patient may come across as linguistically proficient, medical terminology can be challenging, and these patients will benefit from involving a trained interpreter.)
Ask the patients specific open-ended questions that would test their level of comprehension of the content.
Give a simple written test or questionnaire that requires them to show their understanding.
Ask the patients to problem solve hypothetical situations.
Have patients develop their action plan. (This needs to come from the patient, but you can help to gently guide them in creating the action plan. Not only does this increase their likelihood of following through, but it also helps to determine how much the patient fully understood.)
Likert survey scale: The patients can rate their own level of knowledge and understanding.

Pre- and post-assessments.
Write a 350-word summary explaining your rationale for choosing each of the learning objectives and how each will be evaluated.
Note: Incorporate any feedback your instructor provides you on the objectives and evaluation method. These both will play a critical role in a future assignment.

Task 2 – Risk Management
Risk is any external or internal factor that can have an impact on your project, either negatively or positively. Not all risks will occur, but you must be prepared to manage any and all that do. The goal of risk management is to identify project risks and develop strategies to prevent them from occurring or reduce their impact if they do occur.

Complete the “Top 10” Risk Register for the risks that you determined are of highest priority to your project.
Task 3 – Cost-Benefit Analysis
Read this week’s selected articles on cost-benefit analysis in the University Library.
Conduct a cost-benefit analysis for your education intervention.
Make sure to consider all costs and benefits. For example, if the patient population’s problem or issue could result in readmissions to the emergency room, then consider the impact that will have on the organization’s reimbursement rate from CMS. In other words, if your education intervention is successful in eliminating or reducing the population’s problem or issue, which would in turn lower the readmission rates, then the benefit of implementing the education intervention would be that lower readmission rates would translate into higher rates of reimbursement.
Create a table, with a corresponding explanation, to depict your project budget and potential benefits and savings to demonstrate a cost/benefit ratio analysis. See the Project Budget and Cost Benefit Analysis Example of how one student completed this task.
In 175 to 350 words, summarize the results of your cost-benefit analysis.
