How to Prevent Civil War
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to critically examine the challenges faced by the nation as western territories were added. Each time a new state entered the Union, the question of whether it would be slave or free increased the divisions between the North and South. But the Civil War was not inevitable, it was a failure of leadership. If we can look back and consider ways to solve major problems from the past, we might learn how to solve today’s major problems.
Assignment Description
How to Prevent Civil War
In this module you learned about westward expansion and the rising tensions over slavery. These tensions led to a variety of political actions and compromises including the Tallmadge Amendment, the Compromise of 1820, the Wilmot Proviso, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Clause of 1850 and more.
Western expansion and the entry of states as either slave or free states is a major cause of the Civil War. Based on the events up to 1850 (do not discuss post 1850 or current events), propose a set of political, economic, and/or social solutions that could have prevented Civil War. Be specific. Describe historical cause and effect. Use the arguments of people that lived during this era (Frederick Douglass, Walt Whitman, etc.). Explain why your proposal would prevent war.
Note: You are not limited to the events listed in these instructions, you can consider the entire spread of events from 1800 onward, make economic, political, and/or social proposals. Be sure the logic of your proposal is rooted in real conditions in the nation by citing and explaining the historical circumstances.
Some considerations that might guide your approach to this assignment:
Review the module materials chapter carefully.

More than eight million African Americans were held in slavery in the southern states
Southern planters, who held enslaved persons as property, often guaranteed loans using the value of human laborers. This meant they could not simply free everyone – they would still owe the payments on the loans.
Southern senators needed to control at least half the Senate in order to prevent Congressional interference with the institution of slavery
The United States was rapidly expanding
Northerners had a vital interest in adding new free states for the free market of the industrial revolution to spread and create more jobs
The abolitionist movement was growing in the North
The nations founding principles declared that all men are created equal
