How might an academic interpretation be different from the common sense, or day-to-day understanding,

*** There are two things to do in this assignment. ( A reflective paper + attached inventory )***
    – 3 pages in total.
    – I’ll provide you the weekly class materials in the additional materials / in link below.

    – You may also use your own references if you want.
    – If you use the materials that I’ve provided you, you must use in-line citation, e.g., (Fausto-Sterling, 12).
    *Reflective paper :
    – This is a reflective paper introducing the general topic of “gender” in RCGS in the U.S. studies. After introducing, compare this to a common-sense notion of “gender” and include concepts of “assigned sex” and “gender” in your reflection and discussion, as you understand it.
    – You must introduce the statement “Gender Is Something I Do” in your paper, preferably in the first few paragraphs. You must explain what this means to you. You may use the “I” and reflective voice.
*Do your best to interpret this statement and explain in the context of your paper.
*How might an academic interpretation be different from the common sense, or day-to-day understanding, of gender as something that we “are born with,” instead of as something we do?
*How are everyday occurrences already intensively regulated through and by perceptions of “gender.”
*Keep in mind, a social event like a “gender reveal party” might be viewed from our critical, historical perspective, as about genitalia and the social expectations of assigning sex as gender from the moment before/of birth, which is distinctly different than imagining social expectations, ideals, and hegemonic roles that we assign to “sex” as rooted in a supposed ideal of gender.
    *24-hour Gender Attached Inventory :
    – In any 24-hour period during Week 4, please document as much of the following as possible, to create an Inventory of/for yourself.
    – Document verbalized words, terms, spoken language, recorded language, conversations, or other verbalized or communicated discourse that invokes, names, indicates, or otherwise assigns sex/gender (this can be as simple as: “hey guys”; “hi babe”; “she’s so femme”; “you look so handsome”; “is he going to the store”; “they are not going,” and of course, “he,” “she,” “they,” and kinship/gendered terms, like, “mom,” “dad,” “girlfriend,” etc.)
    – You will not be able to document all conversations and usage of gendered terms. Attempt to document, at least, 20-30 verbal discourse/instances from the 24-hour period, and for inclusion or discussion in your Project #4 paper.
    – Tip: Films, videos, social media hosted video, news broadcasts can and should be included if you encountered this in your 24-hours.
    – Tip: You may want to use a notebook or notepad or j”field” journal throughout the 24-hour period to help your research and documentation process.
    – Then, also, document material items, like perceived “gendered” clothing, food labels, branding, marketing materials, ads and logos, published materials, personal hygiene goods, or any other material items that invoke, name, indicate, or otherwise assign sex/gender and are in your immediate environment and in (1) 24-hour period.
    – The 24-hour period for both verbal and material discourse should be the same.
    – Inventory items that are already in your immediate personal/social space, and in your “daily world,” so to speak.
    – You will not be able to document all gendered materials.
    – Attempt to document 10-15 material items from the 24-hour period, for inclusion in your Inventory and/or discussion in your paper.
    – You may include pictures, images, or other inserts for Project #4, but does not count toward overall pages.
    – You may include any ideas, items, critiques, or revelations from your 24-hour Gender Inventory in your #4 Reflection Paper, but you do not need to include its entirety.
    – Attach your 24-hour Gender Inventory to your Project #4 Reflection Paper. You should refer to your inventory, at least, once in your paper. Attempt, though, to reflect thoroughly on your 24-hour “results” in your composition. It will offer us much to consider on the “social construction of gender in everyday life” in any case.
*** Please let me know if you have any question.
    *** Thank you***
