At this point, we should have all read one of the versions of Romeo and Juliet shared in this module. After having read and familiarizing yourself with the story, characters, and themes, follow the guidelines below to share your vision were you to direct this play.
The Basics: This paper should be written as a formal essay in MLA format. It should be typed, double spaced, with proper grammar and spelling. It should be 1000 words total (~4 pages).
Guidelines: Please discuss the following topics throughout your paper.
Each topic should be covered in 1-2 paragraphs. Some paragraphs may be longer/shorter than others just depending on how it strikes you. There is not a “right or wrong” answer as it may be different for each individual. Just be sure that you discuss your thoughts/opinions on each topic fully and with as much specificity as possible. Here are the topics to be covered:
1. Logistics. What are the logistical elements that you would need to consider if directing this piece? How many characters are present in the play? How many locations are present in the play (i.e. outside, Juliet’s house, etc)? What are the “major events” that occur during the play and what are their needs (i.e. weddings, funerals, fights)?
2. Themes. What themes stand out to you in this story? Why? Are any of these themes relatable to a modern-day audience? Do any of these themes present challenges for a modern-day audience? Why or why not?
3. Significance. Why could this be an important story to be told? (Whether or not you personally love a scriipt, if you’ve been hired to direct it, you must ask yourself “why this story” and find something in it that the audience can gleam.) What might the audience be able to take away from this story if it’s done well? How might it help an audience member to grow, learn, or empathize?
4. Vision. How might you see this story being told in the most effective and/or interesting way? What time period would you set it in? Why? What color palette do you see the world of the play in (bright, dark, neutral, etc)? Why? What region would it work best in (be specific: “Paris”, “Atlanta, GA” or “Central Park” are very different places) and why?
5. Technical. What would you ask your design team to consider with your concept in mind? Would you like a “fully realized” set with all of the bells and whistles? Or would you ask your Set Designer to see what they can do creatively with “representational” set pieces? Do you think the characters in the play need multiple costume changes throughout? Or would you ask your costume designer to create one “look” for each character, and perhaps they just add pieces from there? What kind of sound do you think would best serve the play? Do you want the Sound Designer to consider modern day music for transitions? Or music from different time periods? Lyrics or purely instrumental? Consider what guidance and/or direction you would offer your production team on the first meeting with technical elements in mind. Remember, you want to give them the freedom to create as well as an idea of what will help unify the world.
6. Overall. What are your overall thoughts about the play? What do you expect to be some challenges while directing it? Why? What do you think will be some of the exciting parts about working on this piece? Why?
7. Marketing. When describing your production of Romeo and Juliet (or what you hope it will be), how would you sell it to a friend? How would you describe it to a stranger? How might you help the Marketing Team at the theatre help understand how they can best pitch it to potential audience members? What about your production will be special?
8. Closing. What is most exciting to you about getting to “direct” this production? How do all of these various topics connect to create a unified world? What are the final thoughts you’d like to share in the summary of your vision or concept?
