This lecture, Lecture 5, Measurement of Air Pollutants, discusses how we measure the amount of air pollutants coming from one or many sources. One must measure something before one can manage it. This is the only lecture all semester with a “homework” assignment. I want you to be able to calculate the emission rate of an air pollutant. Some students get very intimidated by this. But the math involved is very simple; math that you probably learned back in middle school or junior high, so hang in there; you should be able to pick it up, even if it’s been a long time. Be sure to check out the PowerPoint presentations with the Emissions Factor example and the additional Material Balance example that I’ve provided in the Module. It’s a good idea to go over simple examples of how to calculate emissions using emission factors and via material balance. There will be examples of this for you to solve on the Quiz and on the Exam so please get the process down. If you’re having trouble with it, please email me and schedule to get together with me during my office hours on Thursday evenings. Here’s the assignment for this week (again, the only “homework” assignment I will give):I want you to compute two sets of emissions. First, a boiler combusts 50 million cubic feet of natural gas and 200,000 gallons of No. 2 fuel oil per year. The emission factor for NOx from combusting natural gas is 100 lbs NOx for every million cubic feet of natural gas combusted. The emission factor for NOx for combusting No. 2 fuel oil is 20 lbs NOx for every 1,000 gallons of No. 2 fuel oil combusted. How many lbs of NOx does this boiler emit in a year?One thing that is very important and many students miss every year is to focus on the question and answer it (see how I made the question bold). Don’t go off on tangents – particularly on the Quiz and the Exam to come, as they are tightly timed!The 2nd problem I want you to do is a material balance emission calculation. A manufacturer spray paints onto a certain product, as follows; they use10,000 gallons per year of blue paint which has a density of 9 lbs/gallon of paint, contains 5% solids and 12% VOCs;
5,000 gallons per year of red paint which has a density of 10 lbs/gallon, containing 10% solids and 8% VOCs; and
14,000 gallons per year of green paint which has a density of 12 lbs/gallon, contains 20% solids and 15% VOCs.
The spray painting has an efficiency (the percentage of paint that reaches the target product) of 75%. The coating operation has filters which catch 95% of the waste solids with carbon that adsorbs 50% of the VOCs. How many lbs of VOCs and particulate matter are emitted from the total coating operation per year?
