My topics, task saturation, mental workload, and situational awareness, have been thoroughly studied. In previous classes of my graduate courses, entire textbook chapters have been dedicated to them. I am thankful for that as a reference. Even though this is true, I believe that my research can produce three specific items for analysis.
For one thing, the study will be designed utilizing a full-motion Embraer 145 simulator. The aircraft does have what is now considered a basic automation level of automation. The case can be made that more automation is helpful or it is hurtful. Based on what happens in the simulator, scholars can make a case for increased automation for future airliners. The opposite could be said by determining that pilots rely on automation too much.
Another item that will be interesting is to see how the pilots transition from one item or task to the next, with the intent of logging everything that the pilots do in order. With this information, different individuals will be able to study what draws a crewmember’s attention and if it is something that should be adjusted in future generations of cockpits. One reference for my research proposal described how individuals could experience change blindness anytime a change occurs during brief visual impairments such as a blink. Another visual impairment could be classified as transitioning from one instrument to another. Momentarily one’s vision will be impaired and it could prevent them from witnessing a key factor during the difficult scenario.
Finally, for me personally, I will be interested to see when pilots feel that they have become task saturated. More specifically, the number of tasks that need prioritizing and accomplished. It is well known that humans do not multitask. They simply switch between multiple tasks quickly. After the crewmembers experience the scenarios, they will be asked to complete a questionnaire. One question they will be asked is how many items did they feel they became task saturated. This is another piece of information that could become useful to other researchers who are attempting to complete studies on the same topics.
