The micro-essay is an exercise in thinking and analyzing like an historian. To do so, you will formulate an argument and bring evidence to support it.
Your micro-essay should analyze one primary source from three different perspectives: content, context, and historical significance.
In your first paragraph briefly summarize the content of the source, state your argument, and give an overview of your paper. Be sure that this paragraph states what kind of source this is (letter, woodcut, legal code, an historical account), the author’s name, and the date the document was created or published.
The body of the essay should use four short, direct quotations, supplemented by information from
the lecture and textbook, to make an argument that answers the following questions:
• What is the historical context?
• What combination of social, religious, political, and economic events coincided with the production of the source and how do these circumstances relate to your quotes?
• What is the significance of the document? How does your source illuminate or contradict the themes, identifications, and concepts we’ve been tracing in lecture?
Do not quote from secondary sources (paraphrasing is fine) or incorporate material from outside sources (Wikipedia, etc.).
Do not use a quotation without interpreting its significance or indicating how it relates to a point that you are trying to make.
Your final paragraph should offer conclusions. Do not introduce ideas not previously discussed in the essay.
