The assigned readings provided us with a number of personal narratives that demonstrated the powerful and complex ways that desire emerges as a central concept in the world of love and sex. While Hooks offers a critical reading of racism and cultural appropriation to think through how desire intersects with the problem of commodifying otherness or “eating the other,” Kafer invites us to consider how a similar logic operates in the context of desiring disability and what this means for the disabled subject. Meanwhile, Mingus shares with us a vision for rethinking the question of desire by embracing the ugly and learning to love ourselves and others, especially as it relates to bodies and lived experiences that inhabit spaces of marginality. As you begin to answer this question, choose at least one of the readings from this week (e.g. hooks, Kafer, or Mingus) and discuss how their analyses help to answer this question, using specific examples wherever possible.
