What are three of your general biases? How do these biases affect your thoughts and behavior? These biases should be based on something other than race.
How to Address This Assignment
Your thesis should name three biases. Any specific beliefs that come about as a result of your bias can be discussed in the body paragraphs. Keep in mind that biases are general; they are non-specific feelings in favor of or against something, usually without logical evidence. They may, however, cause us to form beliefs that are more specific. The example below demonstrates the difference.
Bias (What you should write about): I tend to be suspicious of wealthy people.
Belief (A specific thought that forms due to your bias): I assume wealthy people are greedy.
Your biases should have some actual impact on your worldview. Don’t try to avoid confronting your own biases by choosing inconsequential preferences instead. See the examples below.
Consequential bias (something that likely has an effect on your worldview): I have a bias in favor of wealthy people.
Inconsequential preference (something that is likely not a bias and probably doesn’t matter much as far as your worldview): I have a bias in favor of sandals rather than sneakers.
Please write a 3-page, typed essay in MLA format. In this essay you will discuss three biases that affect your worldview. Your thesis will name these biases. In the body of the essay, please do the following:
In the topic sentence, introduce the bias and name its main effect on your behavior.
Example: My bias against the homeless makes me less likely to try to help them.
Give examples of how this bias plays out – either in specific scenarios or examples of the specific behaviors that you exhibit as a result of this bias. Be sure to add detail to your examples and avoid short, underdeveloped paragraphs with only one small example as support.
Example: When I see homeless people, my first thought is that they should get a job, and I refuse to give them money.
Example: My city proposed opening a homeless shelter; I strongly opposed this proposition and even attended city council meetings to voice my concerns.
