History which keeps alive memory of people’s resistance suggests new definitions of power. By traditional definitions, whoever possesses military strength, wealth, command of official ideology, cultural control has power. Measured by these standards, popular rebellion never looks strong enough to survive. However, the unexpected victories –even temporary ones—of insurgents show the vulnerability of the supposedly powerful. In a highly developed society, the Establishment cannot survive without the obedience and loyalty of millions of people who are given small rewards to keep the system going; the soldiers and police, teachers and ministers, administrators and social workers, technicians and productions workers, doctors, lawyers, nurses, transport and communication workers, garbage men and firemen. These people—the employed, the somewhat privileged—are drawn into alliance with the elite. They become the guards of the system, buffers between the upper and lower classes. How are we seduced into supporting or believing in a warlike Iraq or Afghanistan, turning a blind eye to police brutality, demonizing immigrants, supporting racist agendas, keeping people poor, or LGBTQ people disenfranchised and how are we rewarded for doing so? How do we unknowingly become members of the lynch mob?
How about the guards of the system (Zinn, Ch. 24)?
Look at Between the World and Me, as well as Zinn himself to see how the function of the systems like a white privilege for example, and jingoism keep us docile and well behaved and ignorant as well. What have you learned from looking at history from the perspective of the oppressed? What can these voices teach us about the control of information and the way that we are programmed to accept small rewards to maintain our own “positions” without ever being aware of the big picture? How are we taught to work against our own self-interests, and even our own humanity, for imagined rewards and privileges? You will need to use the material as a basis
