Hi I just need to respond to four different peers discussions. 200 words per response please.
1. Good Morning Class,
I chose Option #1 for this weeks discussion.
Consider events, informational websites, media, or even family/friends that have helped you develop your beliefs.
I was born, and raised in central Kentucky, near Lexington. Growing up there, I fell in on the side of poor, so poor that lower class was considered middle class for my family. Being this poor, I never really had a chance to have many friends because no one wants to hang out with the poor kid. The only friend I had until the age of ten was a young man named Anthony Charmichael, who I went to school with. He was African American and due to that friendship I grew up believing that African Americans were the only honest ethnic group of people, and I wouldn’t trust other Caucasians because those were the rich families, and according to my parents, they hated me because I was poor. It wasn’t until I was ten to eleven years old that I made a friend with a white kid named Brandon. Because of this early life predicament, I came to believe that no one should be considered better than others. I actually never learned about what racism was until I started going to the University of Kentucky in 2011. In 2013 I joined the Marine Corps, and all of that integration with every ethnicity and gender just reinforced my beliefs that no person is above another. I’ve seen amazing work ethic from all ethnicity groups and genders, and from people who grew up in all different walks of life. I’ve also seen terrible work ethic and awful Marines/Soldiers (once I joined the Army) with the same variety. My beliefs are, everyone deserves equal chances to succeed. I now understand that truly isn’t the case for other ethnicity groups, and in my mind this is an injustice.
Based on a deep self-reflection, identify a self-belief that, you learned later, may have been accommodated/assimilated based on biased information.
A self-belief that I learned later on in life that may be based on biased information is that our government is corrupt and oversteps its boundaries. In my opinion, I see our government as a group of people who enjoy the power and care nothing for the citizens they were voted in to care for. This stems from my belief that everyone deserves absolute free will (stemmed from morally sound judgement) and that no one should have any right to dictate how I live my life. I understand that there are many cases in which the government takes a hands off approach, but I have seen many cases where I am persuaded to believe that our government just does not care for us as citizens. This is a belief that I struggle with even discussing because regardless of what others say, I believe the evidence they may provide just doesn’t justify the actions that have persuaded me to this side. That doesn’t mean that I don’t try to believe there are certain congressmen/congresswomen or representatives that actually ran for office with selfless intent, but when the government is allowed to dictate things such as issues concerning women’s bodies, then I believe that the government is reaching far beyond what they should be allowed to reach for and are selfish with their intent to have power, control and dominate.
Analyze how your beliefs changed based on this information.
Growing up, I didn’t understand much in the way of government, I didn’t even understand laws other than, don’t kill and things of that nature. It wasn’t until around High School when President Obama ran against John McCain ran that I actually began to understand the role government played. I just remember my mother yelling at the TV over it, and I remember asking myself why it mattered so much. After that, I began reading about the two party system and feeling that it just seemed a bit out of place. Why were there only two true parties? My Mom sort of convinced me to go republican but that never sat well. As time went on, I started to see the control both parties had on our nation and then learning about the Libertarian party and how they believe in true liberty and freedom, I started to change my “beliefs” and finally fell into the position I have found myself in. As time goes on, I dig myself further down believing that I just want Americans to have full freedom.
Discern how you were able to identify the bias and adjust the developed knowledge.
I’ll be honest, I couldn’t think of a bias that I had at all. I asked my wife about any biases I had and this issue that I have with the government was our of her mouth so fast that I figured there was no way it wasn’t the case. My wife identified it. How can I adjust the developed knowledge? Well, to start I can maybe come up with a list of things that maybe do fall within our government’s jurisdiction and see how they have helped out in those situations. One thing that comes to mind immediately (even if the system itself is flawed) is the student loan program. In my opinion, with all of the defaulted loans, our government continues this program to help Americans to afford higher education. The fact that our government is considering doing this for free as well is just more cause to believe that maybe not everything is about control, and that there are some cases in which our leaders are selfless. Another case is how National Forests are protected by law. I’m a huge fan of the outdoors, and our government goes to great lengths to protect our natural landmarks and beautiful forests. This in itself is a selfless act since I’m there are many cases in which there is more money to made from the natural resources protected within those forests.
Identify whether the bias might fit into any of the following categories and explain how.
Without any doubt, this bias falls into the category of confirmation bias. I always see the negatives of what our government does, and each time it appears, it just justifies my beliefs even more. I rarely see the good in our government, and that’s if I allow myself to see it at all. If an article is labeled positively with remarks about our government, I usually just skip past it as I immediately believe that it is probably a lie. I truly focus on only the information that supports my views and only discuss this issue with people who agree with my views, and avoid the conversation with someone who thinks otherwise.
2.Explain cross-cultural training.
Cross-cultural training involves teaching employees the differences between nationalities to help promote inclusion within diverse organizations. This could also include our similarities because many cultures have many values and beliefs in common.
Do you think cross-cultural trainings should be more commonplace? Why or why not?
Cross-cultural training should be more commonplace because it allows others to see the perspective of others on different subject matters even if they do not agree with it. For instance, if I go to church on Sundays and would like Sundays off from work, I would be grateful to have that recognized by my employer. On the other hand, if I work with a Muslim who prays 5 times a day, I should respect their prayer breaks just the same. Being secluded in life gives everyone this vague picture of everyone else in the world that is not like them. “Over the years, several students have observed the absence of opportunity for exposure in their educational socialization to literature, science, math, or other contributions to society by persons of color or members of typically excluded groups” (O’Neal, 2012). I went to a mixed culture school, so I had friends of different ethnicities, but it was limited to those of my same race. As I got older, I refused to limit myself to such a small circle. I do have long-term friendships with different nationalities and encourage the same with my children. My daughter speaks Spanish and does not see color. She picked it up from a daycare friendship that she still has now at 25 years old. They talk to each other in English and Spanish so they both taught one another over the years. I had a perception of Germans before I attended the Foreign Student Exchange program which involved us staying with families in Dusseldorf for a month. My mindset instantly changed. I was shown so much love and it helped me to loosen up and reciprocate the same energy. Exposure to diverse cultures changes a person’s perception of life overall.
In multinational organizations, should the trainings be adapted to reflect the culture of the clients that they serve? For example, there are some differences in how different cultures approach customer service.
A company must include cross-cultural training to better understand its clients. This knowledge can help with convincing them to remain loyal or to even create potential new clients. The way that someone is treated within an organization is imperative from employees to customers. Multinational organizations’ success is based on understanding each ethnic culture. “It is thus necessary and valuable to adapt various features of performance management systems to cross-cultural differences (Sumelius et al., 2014)” (Youssef-Morgan & Noon, 2017). Respecting each other’s differences is the first step to inclusion.
Think of a company (or do an online search to identify one) that serves multinational populations. List two important aspects of training that should be considered that might differ from the company culture itself in training based on the population(s) they serve.
A company that serves a multinational population is Starbucks. One aspect of training that should be considered is their serving sizes because most places do not give big portions of food or beverages as we do in America. Another aspect would be the social setting. Hours of operations would vary from country to country based on the local business hours. I also believe that understanding different diets allows for the company to make proper menu changes worldwide that suit each culture respectfully.
3. Select a topic you would be interested in researching.
Developmental Psychology
Provide some background information that shows why this is an important topic to be explored further.
Developmental psychology is the study of physical, social, and cognitive changes over a person’s life span (Newman, 2016). The American Psychological Association (2022) expands on the areas that developmental psychology covers by adding intellectual, perceptual, personality and emotional growth. I believe that this area of psychology needs to be explored further because it is an ever growing and changing topic. As proof, developmental psychology only included the study of the developmental changes of children, but now developmental changes are recognized at any age throughout a person’s life not just infant until adult stages (Newman, 2016). Developmental psychology also helps to explain the miles stones or stages children should pass as they get older. Another reason that developmental psychology needs to have continued research is that information gathered regarding the developmental stages of children have helped to explain many behaviors that adults exhibit. The continued study of developmental psychology is essential to understanding how people learn, mature, and adapt as they age (American Psychological Association, 2022).
Apply the scientific method by identifying one or more appropriate research areas of psychology that your topic might align to. Does it fit into more than one?
The scientific method is how psychologist conduct research, the process, their goals, and their conclusions which can all be conducted through four steps; hypothesize, operationalize, measure, and explain (Newman, 2016). A research area of psychology that developmental psychology aligns with could be how parenting styles affect their children’s physical activity level. Like if parents do not have screen time limits will children take the initiative to play and be active themselves or will they stay inactive in front of a screen? Compared to if a parent has strict screen time limits will the child be active or will the child find another way to be inactive like reading or coloring? Another example could be how does early childhood care (day care) verses staying home with a parent until school age effect a child’s socio-emotional development? Does it affect how the child forms attachments or engage in their environments? This area of research could also be studied under social psychology because it involves the study of a child’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors shaped by other people (Newman, 2016).
4. According to Newman (2016), psychology research is the scientific study of human behavior. The psychology research I am interested in is Depersonalization Disorder. Depersonalization disorder is a mental disorder disrupting an individual’s cognitive processes and distorting their perception of reality. Philosophers and cognitive scientists have recently explored the sense of self in cases where individuals feel they have lost it. A phenomenon called depersonalization disorder Deane et al., 2020). I chose this topic because I endured a significant amount of trauma, causing me to dissociate myself from reality and my existence. Trauma is inevitable, so I see depersonalization disorder as a real-world problem affecting everyday functions at the home, work, and personal and formal relationships.
According to Newman (2016), the central research area for this topic of depersonalization disorder is cognitive psychology because it studies internal mental processes and how they are affected after enduring or witnessing a traumatic event. By taking it a step further, you could research the biopsychological part of the disorder by studying genetics and what happens in certain parts of the brain with its presence. But cognitive psychology is the central basis to start.
According to Newman (2016), the subfields are clinical and counseling psychology because the disorder needs a medical diagnosis from a psychiatrist (Doctor) and counseling utilizing cognitive therapy to help them rewire their thought process. I will perform an inducted research synthesis by comparing and adding already known data to an explanation of causes, effects, and possible solutions.
