Hello! I am a first-year student and this is my final paper for My English 102 course. Basically, the instructions are to pick one of the topics from down below and discuss it between Claudia Rankine’s Citizen: An American Lyric and one other work previously discussed in my class such as: (Othello, Oroonoko, Lyrical Ballads [using at least two poems or one of either Coleridge’s Ancient Mariner or Wordsworth’s Tintern Abbey], or Heart of Darkness). Here are more detailed instrcutions:
STEP 1. Choose ONE of the following topics and discuss both Rankine’s Citizen and one other major work from the course (Othello, Oroonoko, Lyrical Ballads [using at least two poems or one of either Coleridge’s Ancient Mariner or Wordsworth’s Tintern Abbey], or Heart of Darkness):
■ RACE: Compare and contrast how these works discuss race. Is there a hierarchy of races? Are the authors progressive in their views or are they racist as we would define that term today?
■ CLASS: Compare and contrast how these works discuss class. Do the authors affirm or disrupt the hierarchy of classes? How does the class system of the non-Citizen work compare to the class system of today in Citizen?
■ GENDER: Compare and contrast how these works discuss gender. Are these authors sexist in their treatment of female (and male) characters? Can the non-Citizen author or Rankine be called a feminist by today’s definition of the term?
STEP 2. Use at least two scholarly sources in your essay. Please cite your additional scholarly source in text [for example, “(Giroux 28)”] and on a References page at the end. (PLEASE NOTE: You do not need to list anything from any course text in your References page.)
Quotations: You are always clearer when you are more specific. Quote liberally from the texts you analyze to illustrate your points. When quoting from Citizen, please cite in parentheses by name of the author and page number [for example, “(Rankine 5)”].
