he Reconstruction Act was to manage the disarray in the south to banish slavery creating a free-labor community and treat every man equal also it was to protect those already born-free from any misacts of whites resulting in a prosperous life. Reading Eric Foner’s ‘Why Reconstruction Matters’ elaborates on different moments that the rewritten laws were to include the rights of all races not just those of whites. During this time beginning with the fourteenth amendment that states that all who are born in the United States including former slaves and free Black people would be safe by this law. This is important for Americans today because America is a melting pot of all ethnicities and classifications and this fourteenth amendment protects everyone from discrimination for being another ethnicity than white or those who may be gender neutral or have different sexual orientations than others this amendment states that we are equal regardless of those differences. The Reconstruction also allowed African Americans the opportunity to vote and hold government positions in every level where change began in the south with the first state-funded public school system, the ability to barter for plantation laborers, and banned racial discrimination in public transportation. The Reconstruction failed because of racist mentality of people elected for government positions that were able to halt the progression of change and equality. Like today racism has yet to change. Constantly on the news there is a report of an American attack on a church, school, parade, concert, or grocery store whether racially motivated or terrorism today’s society does not seem to much better than that of the one over one hundred years ago. The Reconstruction failed for multiple reasons beginning with whites during this time still not consider Black people as equals and made it extremely hard for them to become independent. Freed people had to rent the lands just to grow their own foods because money was scarce and acquiring a tab at a store was impossible since the interest rates were too high for free people to afford. Another reason I can say that it failed was due to the Ku Klux Klan using violence against free Black people as stated, “to deter them from exercising their citizenship rights and freedoms.” This alone may have been the roughest time for Black people in the south since the Klan wanted white supremacy and Black people to be unfree and back dependent on whites since Black people were inferior to white people. The Reconstruction Act was important because it included everyone living in the United States as it should have been from the beginning of time. It was meant to denounce the discrimination of any race other than that of white people and end slavery in the south making both north and south a better place to live. And since this became about after the Declaration of Independence where we all learn to this day in grade school “we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.” (514)
