*The mutant is dark body color
Phenotypic Description (ideally 2 paragraphs of text)
· These are the body structures that you could mention when comparing WT and mutant flies (mention they are similar if there’s no difference):
1. Eye color/shape/size
2. Head shape/size
3. Body color/shape/size
4. Bristle shape/size
5. Wing shape/size/vein pattern
· Mention difference between newly eclosed mutant vs WT flies
· Mention difference between male and female mutant flies, compare them to WT
· Mention developmental stages (larva/pupa) and talk about their appearance and time of development
· Mention expressivity/penetrance of mutant phenotype.
o Expressivity is how different mutant flies look compared to each other (For example, dark body color mutation can have high expressivity if some flies are darker than other in mutant population)
o Penetrance is how many individuals express mutant phenotype (For example, bristle mutation has complete penetrance if all flies from mutant population have mutated bristles)
· Mention nickname and justify why it was chosen. (My nickname for the mutant is “venom”)
Candidate Genes (ideally 1-2 paragraphs of text)
· 5 candidate genes must be selected for your mutant phenotype.
· Its very important to compare phenotype with your mutant flies and justify why you think it’s a good candidate.
· You can discuss the molecular mechanism that lead to the phenotype of the candidate gene if you want (I think you should)
· Candidate genes can be selected searching mutant phenotype class on flybase.org
o Go to flybase.org
o Instead of J2G in search bar select ‘Search Flybase’
o Search terms like “body pigmentation”, “short bristles”, “curled wings”, etc.
o In search results, check the box for ‘Genes’ and make sure only Drosophila melanogaster is selected in organisms.
o Select genes that have phenotypic description similar to your mutant phenotype.
Figure
· Multipaneled figure with Bold labels
· Minimum: 1 mutant and 1 WT (same sex is preferable)
· You can include both genders too if you want (total 4 flies)
· Must have a title
· Figure legend is required
· Figure legend needs to be detailed and must mention phenotypic differences and similarities between mutant and WT. Must include nickname of the mutant in the figure legend.
References
· 5 references only (one for each candidate gene)
· No need to reference Flybase
· Must follow Genetics journal format
