Globalisation: Academic writing exercise
Purpose
This exercise gives you the opportunity to develop and then demonstrate your ability to:
1. Demonstrate your understanding of the question.
2. Research the topic using various appropriate academic sources.
3. Demonstrate that you can analyse and evaluate (rather than simply describe).
4. Write clearly, in a logical and coherent way.
5. Reference the sources you have used.
The task
Answer both of the following two questions:
a. Critically evaluate the impact of globalisation on contemporary work over the past twenty years. Justify your answer with support from your reading and experience.
b. Evaluate the extent to which the effects of globalisation on working lives have been positive or negative. Illustrate your answer with examples and support from your reading.
Guidance
• • You will need to research (i.e. read widely) to support your answer.
• • Draw upon your own experience to support key arguments.
• • Word limit: 500 words per answer (1000 word total), excluding reference list.
• • You can structure your answers either in an essay style or report style (i.e. with headings).
• • As you only have 500 words per answer, introductions and conclusions should be kept brief.
Further Information
This exercise is to help you develop your research, thinking and writing skills as well as to allow you to showcase them. The topics covered in the Academic Writing workshops are all being covered in this exercise. Once you have planned out your answer, it is worth thinking, ‘If I were marking this, how would I grade it against the marking criteria?’ That may point you to where you need to make adjustments. Then do that again when you have finished writing.
Writing a post-graduate paper is a new experience for most people and it takes a while to develop the necessary skills. Try hard to get your first attempt to pass, but please do not panic if it does not – this is a learning experience in a safe and supportive environment.
