Getting Started
The heart of many qualitative research studies involves gathering information that is usually language-based in some format. Typically, it involves handwritten field notes from an ethnography study, an audio recording from a focus group, or a video of an interview. The words from these recorded sources are often transcribed into a word processor with numbered lines. Then the researchers will individually go through each line and attempt to discover themes. These themes are then coded into organizing subthemes. Each of the researchers will then compare their work and discuss their respective themes and how similar or dissimilar they are. They attempt to hone down the themes together as they attempt to refine the themes until there is agreement. While this describes a manual process, there are software programs that can help discern themes. Some studies have thousands of lines of data and so qualitative research software can be a useful tool in these types of situations. This process of thematic analysis and open coding is very common amongst qualitative research studies.

Review the transcript(Word document) from the Ben Carson video. The transcription goes for approximately the first 14 minutes of the interview.
Download the 6.4 Worksheet(Excel spreadsheet). You will use this to complete the assignment.
On the 6.4 Worksheet, type your name in cell B1, note that there are 3 columns. In the first column and on the first pass, write down at least 15 different themes. It is okay if they are closely related to each other.
Review your original 15 themes and compare them to the original text, you will then narrow them down to 10 themes that still encompass the meat of the interview.
Using the same thinking process, refine your 10 themes down into a final 5 that are summative and representative of the interview. There should be a clear linkage between the three steps illustrating the refinement of your thinking through the three passes.
Save your work on the rubric and submit it to the assignment link in Brightspace by the end of the workshop for a possible total of 100 points.
