Getting Started
Research-informed interventions should guide your clinical social work practice. As you seek opportunities for engaging in family systems work, consider whether evidence- or research-informed interventions can meet your client system’s needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Not every research-informed intervention will work with every client in every situation. It will be important for you to rely on your own expertise, the expertise of your field supervisor and other consultants, and social work ethical principles as you consider interventions. As you develop more experience in the field, you will learn to trust your own ‘practice wisdom’ as you engage clients. Practice wisdom should be balanced with current, research-informed interventions.
In this workshop activity, you will read a case study from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Addiction that involves a family. You will discuss with your classmates how you might proceed with this family. Additionally, you will explore whether there is a research-informed basis for engaging in a family systems approach as you help this family cope with these complex family circumstances.

Background Information
In the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism case on the Olivares family, a complex family situation emerges. In the case study, one family member is abusing alcohol, and that alcohol abuse has started to cause significant problems at work and at home. The family’s circumstances are complicated by various social and economic issues.
The situation, in this case, is common at many agencies. At your field placement agency, you might have opportunities to work with a family like the Olivares. Other field placement agencies may not provide this direct experience. Use this discussion opportunity, along with your interaction with your field supervisor, to explore how you might respond to the Olivares family. Though a case study can never provide you with a complete opportunity for making clinical decisions, it can help you become more confident in responding to clinical issues that are unfamiliar to you. Seek out as many opportunities for expanding your clinical expertise as possible.
