Formal Paper: Literary Analysis
Purpose: A literary analysis is close study of a text to present it argues; in our own case, the analysis is limited to the examination of the text only to show how it represents any of the ideas we have studied (Ideas of God, Reason and Faith, Gender, Race)
You are completing this assignment to achieve the following:
 Demonstrate information literacy
 Interpret and express ideas through writing
 Use texts effectively to develop an argument
 Show how a text contributes to history of an idea
Audience: This assignment should be directed at your scholarly peers, and you may assume that they have only a casual familiarity with your idea and text.
Assignment: For this assignment, students should choose one of the novels we studied in the course: Doctor Faustus, Inferno, Hamlet, Heart of Darkness, Things Fall Apart.
You should develop a literary analysis of the novel to show how it represents any of the ideas we studied. You cannot use one text to discuss two different ideas.
Here are questions your analysis should answer:
1. How does your chosen text represent the idea (God or Faith and Reason or Gender or Race)?
2. How does the representation fit in the history of that idea?
3. Does the representation fit the overall impression of that idea in the period shown in the text or is it developing a new understanding?
Requirements: You should have at least five (5) sources; only one of these sources should be a website; the rest should be a combination of journal articles and books.
Content/Subject: Your analysis should focus mainly on the “idea” and the novel you have chosen. The sources should be current—not older than five years. More important, your paper should not answer the questions one after the other; the questions are just guides to help you think of what to say.
1. Begin with an introduction where you identify both text and the idea you are working on; then, state your thesis for what you intend to do.
2. Cite and analyze sources and use the novel as evidence; do not quote a passage without showing the relevance of the quotation; and avoid quoting long passages without justification.
Specific guidelines to follow when completing this assignment are:
 5 sources of various types (book, article, one website, etc.).
 Adherence to MLA/APA format for all citations/references/works cited
 Sources in alphabetical order according to author.
 Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
