For this week’s assignment, we will discuss this YouTube video, Hospital Finance Revealed by a Hospital CFO (Links to an external site.), which is a 9.5-minute summary of the key topics addressed by a hospital CFO at a Critical Access Hospital (CAH) located in Pullman, WA. In his video “Healthcare Finance 101 with Steve Febus” (not required to watch for this assignment), the hospital CFO discusses and explains healthcare finance to hospital board members and other non-finance staff. For background, a Critical Access Hospital is a specific designation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with specific criteria (Links to an external site.) to be eligible. These hospitals are located in rural areas and are thus critical to meeting the healthcare needs of the community. For Medicare services, CAHs are reimbursed based on reasonable cost plus 1% and may have several other reimbursement methodologies depending upon the contracted payer. CAHs have various financial challenges that is worth learning more about but is beyond the scope of this course.
