For this Module’s summative assignment, I want you to envision that you are a director of the play Othello. You have already accomplished some of the tasks that a director would do through the course of the module– completing script analysis and looking at the historical implications of the play. The next task for a director is developing the dramatic concept: for this week’s summative assignment, please write a statement of your concept.
PLEASE NOTE: in order to complete this assignment well, you need to have a good idea what a dramatic concept is– it is NOT just repeating the themes of the play! Rather it is a complex, workable statement that ties together the themes and metaphors with a visual understanding of how things like costumes and lighting should tie into these themes. If you need help, please look back at our Module on Directing.
The dramatic concept should be at least two solid paragraphs long, and should describe how you see the production centering on a single metaphorical concept.
Feel free to be as specific as needed to convey your ideas. You can branch out and talk about how the concept would impact things like costumes, set, lighting, etc.
Be creative! Remember that the play can be set in a variety of ways, with any number of strong concepts (time periods, locations, different themes highlighted, etc.). Think about what aspect of the play you would like to highlight, and see if you can build a concept off of that. I would suggest avoiding a concept that is very similar to the concept of the National Theatre production at which we have already looked (modern military concept).
