Here are some points to consider while you prepare your posts:
How is REALITY a “social construction” – what does it mean to say that reality is “socially constructed”? And, does this link to any of the material and concepts we covered in Weeks 1+2 in the SOCI 101 Key Concepts Module?
How does the mass media shape individual worldviews AND the social construction of reality?
Use specific facts and points from Ch. 3 that illustrate the role of the mass media in constructing reality. Where there any points in the text that surprised you?
How does this relate to the documentary, REEL BAD ARABS – show me that you can appreciate how the text, the lecture notes, and the videos relate to one another. Are there other examples that come to mind? Does this link back to any of the lecture notes we did in the SOCI 101 Key Concepts Packet?
Please make sure you are relying on the information and empirical research presented in the textbook (versus using your personal opinions & anecdotal experiences – but, feel free to reflect on how the two may have been different) and/or the documentary, Reel Bad Arabs. You will be graded based on your ability to explain the role of mass media in the social construction of reality – how the mass media as a social institution comes to shape individuals and society. In other words – have you read the assigned material and can you make sense of the text while illustrating a sociological perspective?
