Teachers need to consider the whole child when developing literacy lessons. You have learned how to develop oral language abilities, foster emergent literacy skills, evaluate whole language and phonics processes, and pre- and post-assess student skills.
For this benchmark assignment, you will create a small group lesson plan. Use assessment data collected from your field experiences to guide the learning objectives, instruction, assessment, and differentiation within your lesson plan. This plan will also identify appropriate learning strategies in the assignment.
Using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” design a lesson plan to provide instruction on two of the four literacy components (language, listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Create objectives that align to the standards and are developmentally appropriate for your students. You may combine more than one standard in a single learning objective if it makes sense to do so.
Consider the following when designing your lesson plan:
Motivation: How will you motivate your students and appeal to their interests?
Engagement: How will your instruction engage each learner?
Differentiation: For students who perform above average, average, and below average, how will you support their diverse learning needs? Consider students who are English language learners, gifted, have special needs, or have behavioral issues.
Assessment: What formative and/or summative assessments will you implement to measure the mastery of the objectives created for the lesson?
In a 500 – 750 word reflection, respond to the following:
How was the ethical use of assessment data incorporated during lesson development to meet students’ needs?
Discuss the integration of differentiated instruction including developmental, cultural, and linguistic needs of students, how the teaching and learning strategies are appropriate to meet the needs and be effective in achieving individual learning outcomes.
How were accommodation needs considered?
How was the lesson differentiated to meet the needs of all students?
