For this assignment, you have read and thought about the novella Kumkum Malhotra. When you read, you considered elements such as setting, character development, internal and external conflicts, symbolism, motifs and themes, style, genre, allusions, and the various lenses we can use to analyse the story. All these elements (and more!) work together to form the story.
You will choose one of the lenses we have discussed (gender, class, postcolonialism, psychology) and use it to analyze/interpret the novella. Your discussion should be focused, and clearly centered around your chosen lens or perspective and a specific, clear argument or point identified in a thesis statement and reiterated in a conclusion. In other words, make sure you’re focusing on analyzing the story using your lens, and are making an argument or point about that analysis, when you are writing.
The focus of this essay is analysis. This means you are exploring ideas and answering questions, not summarizing or reflecting on the story. The focus of the essay will be on discussing how the story can be analyzed or interpreted through the perspective of your chosen lens, and on making a point or conclusion about that analysis, using evidence from the story (and elsewhere, IF relevant) plus explanations of evidence to support your ideas. These should be your own ideas, not ideas found elsewhere. You do not have to do any research for this essay – the focus should be on YOUR ideas and original thought.
Your essay must include a thesis statement. This should be the final sentence of your first paragraph, and it should introduce the main idea or point or argument of your essay. The topic sentence of each body paragraph should be clearly related to the thesis statement. The conclusion should focus on summing up main ideas and linking them to the thesis statement or primary argument/point of the essay.
There is no need to summarize the story in your essay. Assume your reader has read the novella. All the space in your essay is valuable, and should be used to analyse the story.
