For the detailed assignment scenario and instructions, please see 6.8 “Direct Request: Planning a Plush Winter Retreat” on p. 183 in your book. (Remember — a “direct request” is just a request for information. In this case, you are planning a company retreat and need more information to help you make your decisions. So, you are writing a letter to the resort to get your questions answered and gather information.)
Here are some additional resources to help you with this assignment:
-Read the content in the chapter on the topic, especially p. 159.
-Review the writing plan for direct request messages on p. 159 (yellow box).
-If you have never formatted a business letter before, review p. 157-158 for help on formatting a business letter. Note the sample letter on p. 158. (You do not need to include the letterhead in yours unless you want to.) You can also look at the attached file for help on formatting your letter, and there is a detailed guide to formatting business documents, including business letters, in appendix B of your book (go to the back of the book to see the appendices). See pages A-5 to A-9 for formatting instructions as well as an explanation of the different parts of a letter. The sample on p. A-7 is probably the most helpful. (Most employers/businesses prefer a block-style business letter rather than modified block.)
-Examine the attached ineffective (i.e. poorly written) information request letter and compare it with the attached improved (more effective) letter to learn what makes a good direct letter request.
-Apply what you have learned so far about writing coherent paragraphs, using parallelism, and incorporating lists, bullets, and headings.
-Contact the Success Center for writing tutoring assistance (as always).

To turn in your assignment, you will probably find it easiest to first format your message in a Word document, which you may then upload and attach in Canvas. (Click Start Assignment to do that.) You can also turn in a link to your GoogleDrive or OneDrive document.
