For this final essay, you will bring together the work you have done for identifying issues and formulating questions, the annotated bibliography, and writing the synthesis activities in order to write an argument about your issue question. As such you will argue your position or recommendations about your issue/research question and support your arguments with credible research.
It will not be a five-paragraph essay. It will be a lot longer. However, you have the option of producing a video essay. Resources and videos for producing video essays are included in the Chapter 5 Module.
Whether you decide to write an essay supported by research or a video essay, it will be a detailed and comprehensive academic work designed to both inform readers about your issue from multiple perspectives and convince them to accept your own conclusions and point of view about it.
Chapter 8 contains three different examples of papers with very good syntheses from pages 246-256. Read them to compare different ways to present the summaries of your research and a synthesis of what the research means. Then on page 267, you will find an excellent example of an academic paper arguing about food insecurity and supporting the writer’s arguments with research. It is written and documented in MLA format and, as such, it is a very good example of the kind of paper you will be writing.
