First Phase: Pick a terror incident/two news outlets
Select any incident that you’d deem an act of terror in the U.S. or abroad between year 2000 and now.
Based on our discussions/readings on terrorism, adopt one relevant definition that you think applies to that incident.
Pick a minimum of two news outlets that are starkly different in tone and/or region of origin (e.g., MSNBC vs. Fox; CNN vs. Al-Jazeera; BBC vs. TRT World; etc.) that covered the incident and have a justification for why you chose them.
Second Phase: Investigating the Media Coverage
Building on the readings and class discussions, pick five relevant framing variables, such as headlines, images, captions, tone, sources, nature of sources, terror/mental illness label, identifying perpetrator’s race/ethnicity/faith/place of origin, word count, etc.)
Devise a coding sheet (like the sample I created here) and test it on an article before finalizing it (when done coding, attach the sheet to the essay – doesn’t count toward page number)
Code at least four articles (two from each news outlet published around the same time – ideally published on same day), using the coding sheet. Make sure you take notes (it will help you save time in the analysis and critical reflection).
After honing down on your main findings (e.g., outlet A did not emphasize the identity of the perpetrator, while outlet B did; outlet A called the incident a mass shooting, while outlet B labeled a terror incident; both outlet A and B used images of victims; etc.), crystalize your overarching argument/thesis on whether the two news outlets framed the terror incident similarly or differently and why that may be.
Third Phase: Write the Paper
Write a 6-page essay (DON’T WRITE YOUR NAME, DATE, AND COURSE ON THE TOP – THE DOCUMENT’S NAME WILL IDENTIFY WHO YOU ARE), double-spaced, typed in a 12-point Times New Roman font analyzing how the media covered the terror incident, highlighting factors that may explain that coverage, and the implications of that similar or different reporting
Your essay should address the following:
In about half a page, briefly contextualize the terror incident (i.e., what, when, where, who, etc.)
In about half a page, provide solid justification of why it’s a terror incident by tapping into and engaging with existing definitions
In about one paragraph, lay out the focus of your study, articulate your main argument/thesis, briefly explain your methodology (e.g., type of analysis, news outlets, number of articles, and framing variables as well as the framing definition you’re using), and point the reader to how the essay will flow from here.
In the remaining pages, make sure to address the following while tying them to concepts/theories from class readings, lectures, and/or class discussions:
Main findings on the two outlets’ coverage and how they shared similarities and/or differed (using examples and numbers from your coding/analysis)
Potential factors that may have played a role in that type of coverage, based on existing work you’ve read/discussed in class
Highlight whether your findings align or do not align with previous research we had discussed in class
In the conclusion, wrap up your research project, tie the conclusions to your thesis, and discuss the implications of that type of coverage for the audience and society
