Option 1: Analysis Paper on Women’s Health Portrayed in Advertising
For this paper option, you must first become aware of advertising about women. Look at billboards,
magazines, television, products in stores, and elsewhere. Consider how the media advertises products to
women by using unrealistic and unhealthy standards and how the media exploits women and sex to sell
products that do not require sex or nudity from women to advertise.
1. Select one advertisement, other than a diet ad, that portrays women in an unrealistic and
unhealthy way, suggests a goal for women that is unrealistic and unhealthy, and/or exploits
women and sex to sell products. Include either a copy of the advertisement or provide a URL link
to the advertisement in your report.
1. Who is the suggested audience of this ad? What age group is being targeted? Will other groups
be affected by it?
1. Conduct a small focus group of friends or family to solicit their reactions to the ad. Consider
asking different age groups for a response. Then, discuss the message being sent to society by this ad.
1. Discuss how this ad could affect women’s health. Is this product necessary? Explain why or why
not.
1. Could the message being sent in this ad be presented in a different format? How could the
company still achieve its goal? Offer some suggestions of how the issue could be resolved.
1. Write a letter to the company discussing your response and why this advertising is a concern.
Provide recommendations for improved advertising. Write the letter as a concerned consumer or health
professional. Do not write that you are doing this as an assignment, as it detracts from the sound of your
intent. Your letter should be 250 to 550 words (1 to 2 pages) in length.
As an example, see this ad for Blast Away Fat. The three pictures of abdomens on the right side are
especially striking. Americans need to watch their weight, and dieting ads abound in magazines and
television. They are not all bad if they remind women to watch their calories. But most of them do not
depict realistic goals. Most of us would be more than content with the abdomen in the top picture. It is
unrealistic and unhealthy for women to strive for a body image that is extremely underweight according to
the standardized weight charts, especially since we do not know the height of this woman. Notice that the
graph shows weight for the 170 lb. woman, even though the pictures show a very different story. The
pictures of the abdomens show that this woman lost 23 lbs in one month, which is definitely not in the
recommendations of the American Dietetic Association! This would be an example of a very unhealthy ad
for women. You can use this as an example, but you should find something that is not a diet ad for your
own project.

your response for the sixth task.
1. Include at least two scholarly references to support your discussion.
1. Be written in APA style format.
