Final Essay – The Big Picture
Your task is to present a final essay on a particular topic
in this class to your classmates and professor for consideration and
discussion. This essay is a combination of a summary and analysis. You summarize a topic in the history of
American popular culture from 1800 to recent times. Also, you analyze the
significance of the topic in American culture. In other words, you are going to
tell us about the topic, and you are going to tell us why it is important.
You need sources to support the main ideas in your essay.
How many sources? This is always a popular question from students. You have at
least five paragraphs of main points. You need to support your main points with
sources. You need a variety of sources. So, this means you should have at least
five different sources in your essay. You might have up to ten sources for a
wider variety of viewpoints on a controversial topic, but you should have at
least five sources to be sure you have researched your topic adequately.
How long does the essay need to be? This is always a popular
question from students. The answer is at least seven paragraphs long. A typical
paragraph in college is 100 to 200 words. Let’s say that your introduction and
conclusion paragraphs are closer to 100 words, and your main point paragraphs
are closer to 200 words. This means that your final essay should be
approximately 1200 words. Let’s set the
guideline as a range. Please keep your essays to between 1000 and 1400 words.
Shorter essays probably mean you didn’t have enough to say about the
topic. Longer essays probably mean that
you chose a topic that was a bit too large.
Final Essay – Format
The heading of your new thread will be the title of your
essay. Your name is already part of that heading because Blackboard already
includes your name. Single-space your paragraphs, and put a blank line between
each paragraph. Cite your sources as you use them in the main point paragraphs.
Then, list your references that you cited at the end of the essay.
So, the format is very similar to what we have been doing
throughout this class. This essay simply has more main points and more sources
to support those main points.
A heading with the title of your essay.
An introductory paragraph telling us the topic of the essay
and your thesis.
At least five paragraphs of main points, with APA-formatted
citations whenever you use information from your sources.
A concluding paragraph to sum things up for your reader.
References in APA format listed after the conclusion.
Remember, have at least five sources and 1000 to 1400 words.
Final Essay – Milestone One
Do you work best alone? Or, would you like to work together
with a classmate? Or, would you like to work with two classmates on this final
essay and its accompanying final presentation? The choice is yours. The paper
and presentation can be an individual effort. Or, you can ask a classmate or
two to work together. The limit is a group of three students. So, you have the
option of one, two, or three people.
If you want to work together, then you need to find a
classmate or two. There is a discussion board set up for this purpose. Feel
free to post a message and ask about possible project partners. If you choose
to work with a partner or two classmates, then each person gets the same grade
for the deliverables.
There is an assignment in the Week 7 assignments for
“Milestone One of Final Essay.” Be sure to read the directions in
Week 7 and complete Milestone One. This is a very simple, short, milestone –
one posting, one sentence. Each student
must post a new thread in this discussion board for Milestone One. If you work
with a partner, then each of you post a new thread and each of you say who you
are working with. If you work with two classmates, then each of you post a new
thread and each of you say who you are working with. Each student posts a new
thread.
Final Essay – Milestone Two
Choose a topic.
This sounds easy, but it is an important step in your
project. Many students choose topics which are much too large for an essay.
Then, they end up with a bunch of very general information and a
lower-than-expected grade.
Choose a smaller, more specific topic. Your best friend in
the selection process is our textbook. You will see many, many ideas for
smaller, more specific topics in those chapters. You might get some good ideas
from our films, too.
Be sure to run a few searches on your smaller, more specific
topic. Use our library database – be sure to ask for help from our research
librarians if you need it. Use Google – be sure to run the searches a few different
ways and look over the results. You need to make sure that you will be able to
find good sources for your selected topic.
Milestone 2 is an assignment in Week 8 of our class.
Final essay – Milestone Three
Submit a good, solid draft of your essay to TurnItIn.com for
an originality check. Remember, this paper must be original for this class. Do
not turn in a paper that you wrote for a different class. Do not copy from your
sources. Use your own words.
This is also a good time to work with the Writing Center if
you want their assistance on APA format for citations/references or on your
writing mechanics and style. Former students tell me that our Writing Center
does great work! Also, this is a good
time to participate in our optional peer review of final papers and final
presentations. You will see an ungraded discussion board set up for this
purpose.
Your references will match at TurnItIn.com. That is a good
thing. You will not have a score of 0% since your references are supposed to
match. Also, a stray phrase here or there will match. That is okay, too. Look
for entire sentences or paragraphs that match – that is very bad. And, look for
paragraphs that match except for a word here or there – that is very bad. A
typically good score at TurnItIn.com is a 15% to 20% match, with no full
sentences and paragraphs matching.
You will see specific directions for the TurnItIn assignment
in our weekly assignments.
The deliverable for Milestone 3 is a good, solid draft of
your essay that you submit for an originality check during Week 9 of our
course.
Final Deliverable
Edit your essay as needed based on any feedback from
TurnItin, our Writing Center, or our optional peer review. Then, copy your
final paper from your word processor and paste it into Blackboard as a new
discussion thread for Week 10. Your professor will grade this posting as your
final essay.
