Help me study for my English class. I’m stuck and don’t understand.

KINESICS: the study of body motion or body behavior.
Emblems: gestures that have a direct verbal translation and can stand alone such as the “ok” sign. Illustrators: gestures that complement our words such as pointing when giving directions. Regulators: gestures that may prolong or terminate the conversation such as looking at your watch, walking away or nodding and leaning forward. Adaptors: gestures that make you feel more comfortable in a communication situation such as twirling your hair or tapping your fingers. Affect Displays: facial expressions motivated by emotion such as a smile or frown. In this lesson, you will venture out and observe the people around you. Tune out what they are saying and then sit back and watch. Take notes on what type of gestures (emblems, regulators, illustrators, adaptors and affect displays) are they using? How often do they use each one? Are they aware of these gestures? You will then use your notes to write a typed two-page essay describing what you witnessed. Please let us know where you were, the mall, Starbucks, work etc.. and who was involved, two men sitting at a table…

Purpose: Use the same visual rhetoric knowledge you used to analyze an advertisement to analyze a commercial . Performing this analysis will help you to strengthen your critical reading and thinking skills. Furthermore, being able to identify and make a compelling argument about subtextual ideas will help you not only in this class but also in your other classes and your career.

Task: Your job is to explain clearly and carefully how all or part of the commercial uses rhetoric to persuade the audience to buy their product.

Choose one of the commercials above and answer the following questions:
Who is the speaker? Or, if there are multiple speakers, who are they? Who is the audience? What is the situation? What is the story being told? What is the context of the ad? What is the explicit argument? What is the implicit argument? What does the text want you to feel? What does the text want you to believe? What does the text want you to do? How is the text creating the argument? How is the case being made? How is something being promoted?
Finally, write a 1-2 sentence thesis, creating an argument about the commercial’s use of rhetoric.

Your understanding and analysis of visual rhetoric. Your answers demonstrate thorough and original thought, and your thesis presents a well-crafted argument. Your focus and specificity: your answers should reference both parts of the commercial as well as the visual rhetoric elements and/or logos, ethos, and pathos. Requirements:

The annotated bibliography must include a minimum of 8 scholarly sources (books, journal articles, reputable publications, etc.) that are relevant and directly related to your topic. Be sure to evaluate the quality of your sources. (For example, how old are they? Are they from a reputable source? Who wrote them?)

For each entry on your list, create a 30 to 60 word notation that summarizes the content of the source, and explains its relevance to your research interest.
