Two of the Nineteenth Century’s most interesting and enduring systems of ethics are Deontology and Utilitarianism. Both are, in very different ways, attempts to replace the virtue ethics systems that had dominated Western thought since the time of the Greeks. Although there are obvious differences between Deontology and virtue ethics and Utilitarianism and virtue ethics, it is worth exploring how Deontology and Utilitarianism differ from each other. For your paper assignment, you are going to evaluate a moral problem using both Kant’s system of ethics and Mill’s system of ethics. Be sure to (a) tell me what moral choice Kant would make and what choice Mill would make, (b) explain their rationale for the decision (that is, walk me through the analysis that each thinker would make before reaching a decision), and (c) offer your own opinion as to which thinker is the most correct and why.
Here is the moral problem: you are delivering vital medical supplies to an isolated village in a wilderness region. You happen upon a river and notice that a hiker has attempted to ford the river unsuccessfully. The hiker is obviously struggling and will likely drown very soon. There is no time to summon help as the hiker is drifting downstream and will soon be out of sight. You must choose whether to leap into the river and aid the drowning person or continue with your mission to deliver the medical supplies. As an added complication, assume that you do not know how to swim.
Here are some guidelines to keep in mind when writing this paper:
Do not spend a great deal of time citing material from the textbook. I want you to explain the moral analysis used in both systems of ethics in your own words so that I can see that you understand both systems.
If you do cite Dr. Kreeft’s textbook, please use MLA or Chicago style citation rules. Do not use APA style citations.
DO NOT QUOTE OR CITE FROM ONLINE SOURCES OR ANY WRITTEN WORK OTHER THAN THE TEXTBOOK. I want this paper to be your own thoughts in your own words, not citations from other authors.
