The Risks of Contracting COVID-19
The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a contagious disease that is produced by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Individuals who, unfortunately, contract this illness suffer respiratory deficiencies; some individuals become significantly ill and die, while others recover without suffering any major problems. Additionally, while COVID-19 is novel and is still being investigated, vaccines have been created to help in controllingthe spread of the virus. Interestingly, while some are skeptic in accepting the guidelines and updates that the Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) provide about this disease, the risks of contracting COVID-19 include depression, anxiety, and death.
A major risk of COVID-19 is that it causes depression. Because the disease is a world-wide virus, many people feel restricted. As a result, they experience high levels of sadness because they cannot understand why the disease has drastically changed their life. Also, the disease has been in existence from 2020, and there appears to be no end in sight. Older people, for example, with underlying conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and respiratory disease tend to becomeextremely depressed because of the high-risk of contracting thislife changing disease.
Another risk that COVID-19 presents is anxiety. Students who have registered for college have to make major adjustments; they anticipated a college experience filled withfun and laughter while they are focusing on their studies. Unfortunately, the wearing of masks, social distancing, and online classes have left many students anxious and worried about their future. Additionally, they are demotivated and struggle with even doing assignments, despite how they are prompted. Being anxious or concerned because of the prevalence of a communicable disease can be unnerving, and COVID-19 has definitely been a major factor in how people process what their future holds.
A final risk of COVID-19 is the likelihood of dying. At the onset of the pandemic, it was reported that millions lost their lifewithin a short period of contracting the virus. As a result, many families were grieving because they lost friends and loved ones. Moreover, the prospect of dying from the virus is more pronounced because an infected person that has no symptoms can easily infect an unsuspecting person, particularly since the virus can spread from an infected person’s mouth or nose when that person coughs or sneezes.
In conclusion, COVID-19 has been detrimental to people’s lives. With its emergence, there has been a rise in depression, anxiety, and death. Although vaccines have been created to lessen the spread of the virus, many people are still unwilling to accept and follow the imperatives that are given by the CDC inorder to minimize its spread. Students, older adults have been negatively affected because of COVID-19, resulting in the disruption of lives that would otherwise be considered normal. A question that can be raised is: when will life return to normalcy?
