Choose any poem by Pablo Neruda or Akhmatova, find (or write) and compare several translations of this single poem. Do a close reading of the poem in which you analyze how meaning will be different for different parts/components/lines/words/phrases [use the words that apply as you write] based on choices made in translation. Use one or more of existing scholarship in the field (the scanned translation articles) into your essay somehow.

How does the city function in these works? Do the speakers [you compare] all feel the same about the city? If so, how? If not, how? Etc.
To practice using literary theory, create a structuralist critique of Anna Akhmatova’s poem Requiem or Kafka’s Metamorphosis. In your introduction, make sure to state the theory you will be applying. (There are sample theoretical essay structures in the Literary Theory module.) Please have a Works Cited page for any source material you cite (for example, articles from the databases).

Creative Options
“Remix” one of the following famous poems in your own words/ideas. In your remake, create your poem as per your own interpretation of the poem’s most important qualities.
Suggested poems to remix: “Walking Around” by Pablo Neruda or Requiem by Anna Akhmatova
Your poem should be in the first person.
It should be at least 2 pages, single-spaced (which equals 4 double-spaced pages—use single or double-spacing as you prefer).
Feel free to write your remake in any language, but please include an English translation for me unless it is in Spanish (hablo español).
