INSTRUCTIONS:
Primary Source Image Analysis
Number and Title of the Selected Image (Choose just one image)
Key Detail Analysis (4-6 sentences)- Choose at least two details from the image and explain why you think those details are important. Some questions that you might think about to help you with this part include (these are only a few examples–you are not limited to them):
Does the detail in question confirm or contradict a claim made by one of the assigned secondary sources (e.g., documentaries, textbook readings, etc.)?
Does this image help us better understand something referenced in other course materials or previous images?
Does this detail challenge mainstream assumptions about American history that you have learned elsewhere?
Teacher Ex:
Selected Image: Image #01: Cover Illustration of Harper’s Magazine (Popular Northern magazine), November 1867 ( instructure.com/courses/65109/pages/primary-source-images-module-01-analysis-due-on-sunday-february-13-at-11-59-pm )
One detail that jumps out from this image is the clothing worn by the Black voters. The man at the front of the line wears what looks to be clothing typical of a farm laborer, the one after him in the suit of a professional or businessman, and finally a man in a U.S. Army uniform. This conveys the idea that, during the early years of Reconstruction, a wide cross-section of the Black community in the South became involved in politics.
Another detail of note is the orderly appearance of the line. It suggests that the project of Reconstruction–and, more specifically, of integrating Black men into the electorate–was running smoothly at the time. (Remember this aspect of the image as we move through the course, as Northern attitudes toward Reconstruction changed dramatically after the 1860s.)
