Evaluating Innovation Final Assignments (35%)
Select an innovation in a health informatics subject that interests you. Discuss the challenges this innovation may bring on both the informatics and clinical level. You may choose any of the topics discussed throughout the course or explore any of the chapters from the book that were not covered. You are welcome to research your own topic; if you choose to do so, please inform your instructors. Students will be asked to submit a rough draft of their paper halfway through the course completion. Instructors will give feedback to students, which they can use to prepare for the business pitch of their start-up idea. Feedback they receive from panelists during the pitch can then be incorporated into their final paper.
Part 1 (10%) – Business Pitch
For the first portion of this assignment, students will speak to their idea for their new start-up. Students will have a maximum of five (5) minutes to speak to the innovation that interests them, the challenges that innovation faces, and the ways in which your start-up can help remedy or prepare for those challenges. A panel of 5 judges will give feedback to students; during class time, students are encouraged to give feedback to other students’ pitches. A rubric will be provided on Blackboard.
Part 2 (25%) – Final Paper
For the second portion of this assignment, you will write a paper that is a culmination of your research, your critical thinking, and your problem-solving. You are encouraged to do a thorough literature review regarding the innovation in question, to then fold in your own analyses of what implications this innovation will have on American healthcare, and to end with possible ways to remedy those challenges or to help mold those innovations. You are welcome to discuss the start-up idea that you cover within your business pitch. This paper should be around ten pages, not including the title page and reference page. Please submit your paper with references in APA or AMA format.
