Ethical decision-making is essential during a crisis. Disasters come in many different varieties (natural, technological, human, etc.). Healthcare providers train for such disasters in the hospital (like a fire) or in the community (pandemic). There are four phases in emergency management: mitigation (prevention), preparedness, response, and recovery.
Identify a current event disaster and apply the ethical decision-making criteria from the textbook to evaluate the response to that disaster.
As you read, consider the following questions:
Are you ready to respond to a crisis? What is the duty for healthcare workers during a crisis?
What decision-making strategies are used during a crisis?
What are the ethical decisions made during a crisis?
How are scarce resources allocated?
What are the ethical goals to guide implementation of emergency preparedness?
