Research Essay
By this time in your academic career you are probably more consciously aware of the research process than of any other sort of academic writing there is. As you go into the project, however, let’s keep in mind the things we’ve learned about argument, information, and ideas.
Academic research is still argument focused. We are no longer simply curating sources and reporting on what we find. We must make our own argument. Along these lines remember to consider:
Audience – Let’s not assume that, because we are providing information, everything we research is good information for everybody. Au contraire! We are still best served to carry in our minds that specific person or group that we want to inform. We can assume that, no matter what our subject is, there are people out there who already know this stuff. You are presumably researching this topic because it is interesting to you – so write to others who might be interested like you are.
Thesis – It’s one thing to present evidence that the paleo diet is good for weight loss and overall health, but what makes your essay worth reading over the thousands of documents already out there? Some sort of focused statement is important to show the reader where you’re going and why they should read you. Something cool like, “If not for the T-Rex our cave-dwelling ancestors would have lived at least a decade longer thanks to this amazing diet.” This is something playful and interesting (er, if it’s true!)
Purpose – Sure, sure, your purpose is research – to find out more – but to what end? Remember you aren’t just sharing this information with whoever bothers to see it. We’re practicing real world, audience-driven information here. Are you Michio Kaku telling the world that we can make it to a Tier 1 society with a little more peace and unity? Are you advocating for a certain presidential candidate in hopes of real reform? Do you have a personal investment in immigration issues? Have the president’s tariffs had a direct impact on your life (spoiler alert: yes, they have affected us all – an interesting topic!)
Be sure not to give away your authority. The sources you use should be brief samples of evidence that supports your argument. Usually nothing more than one or two sentences. You should be the one speaking and you should speak from a position of authority – you do not need to apologize for your opinion, you just need to support it.
Remember that you want to try for pages that “speak” to the reader, that say something with every sentence that carries the point forward and supports the claim. We are bringing ideas to the forefront and asking the audience to engage in them. So beyond word counts and page numbers, bear in mind the point of all of this – to inspire the audience to consider your point.

A title for your paper
Course information in the upper left-hand corner
In-text citations when quoting
A works cited page (this page does not count as your minimum 5-7 pages).
