Essay 1: Literary Analysis
OBJECTIVE:
Compose a literary analysis of either one short story, or,
if you prefer, two short stories in which you analyze how the story is written,
thinking about aspects that go into storytelling (character, plot, theme,
symbols, tone, setting, etc.) and how the author uses them in the story (or
stories). Your goal by the end of the essay should be to come to new insight
about the story or stories, something about the characters, or what role
symbols play, or how setting and tone are linked, or any number of other
options, using specific evidence to explain your point. There are sample
literary essays in the Week 7 folder.
This does not mean simply summarizing the piece(s),
although you may need to summarize parts or all of your selected story.
Instead, analysis is based on close examination of the way the story is
constructed to gain new insight into the story’s meaning.
In order to
accomplish this, you should first select the story or stories you want to write
about. Basically, you have two options for how to approach this assignment.
1) You can closely analyze one story
2) You can closely analyze two
stories, comparing and contrasting a one, or maybe two, specific aspects of how
they are written
You should
write about piece(s) that we have read in this class—you could choose any of
the stories we’ve read so far, though I would suggest writing about ones that
were interesting to you, since that will make this assignment easier.
Criteria for Evaluation:
This essay will be graded on a 100-point scale.

Format: This essay should be 2-4 pages in length (if you feel you
need more space to adequately get your point across, longer is also fine). It
should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch
margins. Please format the essay according to MLA guidelines (you can refer to
the OWL at Purdue website [conveniently provided here: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html]
regarding questions about MLA, and we’ll go over basics in class).
