Description
The ‘Group Assignment Part 1: Background and Research Question’ is essentially an Introduction section for the document that will become your Final Report for ENVT3361. It will contain sections on background and relevance, a mini-literature review, and development of a research question or hypothesis for [an aspect of] our class project. The literature that you review will naturally be relevant to the class project and the study site on which you will work, BUT of course the reports or research articles don’t all have to be about the exact field site, or even based in Perth or Australia. The relevance of the literature will be scientific rather than spatial.

Instructions for starting and completing this assessment item
1. Make sure you have good quality information –for instance, by taking the steps suggested in Milestone 2 (page 2).

2. Consider using an “article matrix” like that presented on page 4 to critically examine your literature sources (Milestone 3, page 2) in a way that integrates their findings. You could start your process with the blank matrix provided on page 5.

3. Once you have identified a gap in knowledge (or an apparent gap, since you don’t have time to read all the literature!), suggest a testable research question or hypothesis based on your reading and any background knowledge you have. Again, if you are unsure whether your hypothesis is reasonable or testable, consult one of the teaching team.

4. When you have a testable (i.e. answerable) research question, your next task is to propose experimental or observational aims to test that hypothesis (e.g., we will measure this and compare with that1, OR we will measure here and compare with there2, OR we will assess if a relationship between x and y exists in the field, OR …)

5. Once your aims/objectives are finalized, propose some methods which will achieve these aims. (e.g., we will work at field site a, and measure x by method b and measure y by method c, making use of dataset d and comparing with guideline e, and so on).

REMEMBER that you are writing this in advance of having done the work, so don’t be worried that your ideas might change later, or that your Introduction might not perfectly match your eventual Results, Discussion and Conclusion in your Final Report.

Some Background on the Class Project Study Site
(some of which we may know already)
Smith’s Lake and Charles Veryard Reserves in the City of Vincent are urban parklands to the north of the Perth metropolitan area. Currently an electricity supply substation exists adjacent to Smith’s Lake Reserve, with the remainder surrounded by a mixture of older and more recent residential buildings. Previous land uses or activities on or near the reserves include market gardening, various developments/ demolitions, and an adjacent council works depot. Smith’s Lake is part of the ‘Lake Monger’ system of Perth’s wetlands and swamps that have been drained, and consequently is underlain by sediments mapped as having a high risk of forming acid sulfate soils. In addition, the City of Vincent is aware of a contaminated soil ‘hotspot’ at an undisclosed location within Charles Veryard Reserve. A comprehensive dataset already exists, from the ENVT3361 Class Project in 2017. Smith’s Lake Reserve is important environmentally, aesthetically, and for public recreation. It contains a wetland in the form of a small lake with established fringing vegetation. Importantly, this wetland also acts as a compensating basin for a major branch of the Claise Brook Main Drain, which enters the lake from the north and exits to the south via a gross sediment trap.
