I’m trying to study for my English course and I need some help to understand this question.

Your discussion topic for this week focuses on pgs. 173-174 of your CTC text. Although it is easy to overlook, photos and paintings are more than mere physical representations of their subjects. They are the products of their creator’s choices, which include their intent to relay or convey a theme about their subjects.

Your task is to analyze one of the two portraits on pg. 173 and write a paragraph about what interests you most about the portrait you have chosen. Based on what you see in the photo, make a case for a meaning- or what you think the photographer or painter hoped to convey. In other words, what was their theme in creating this portrait? Base your findings on what you can observe in the portraits. Consider the questions on pg. 174 to use as a guide for your writing process.

When you are finished, please read two of your classmates’ work and comment on their findings. Did someone make a case for a theme that you completely overlooked or did you arrive at similar conclusions?

What draws my attention to the Mademoiselle Caroline Riviere portrait is how young and pretty she is. I would describe her body language as sophisticated and her mood as idyllic. The subject is wearing a white dress, long fingerless leather gloves, and a fur-type accessory around her arms. In the background there is a river, a lot of trees, and a house. The portrait is trying to convey the beauty and purity in her youth

Module 2 Discussion : Analyzing themes in portraits At first glance of the portrait “Tiny” in her Halloween custom, settle, Washington by Mary Ellen Mark. the first thing that caught my eye was her stare piercing through the thin black birdcage veil that was laying over her eyes. she was wearing an old fashion hat with a birdcage veil, elegantly black dress, and black velvet gloves. the body language that tiny is giving off is the fact that she has to have this hard persona on the outside but deep down I feel that tiny is screaming out for help with the situation that she has been placed. this picture was taken tiny was rooming the streets with other 13 years old drinking and getting high. the setting of this photo was on the downtown streets of Seattle Washington 1983. the subject and details that come with this portrait is no matter what living situation you come from .you can always put on a costume which is like a mask that you can hide how you truly feel or even making them feel like a different person even just of a little while before they have to go back to reality.The prompt in this assignment is based on the video or the article. In one to two well reasoned, good length paragraph(s), discuss the possible racial discrimination, if any, you find that exists at the school. If you find no discrimination, discuss why you don’t believe there is any. Your discussion must be supported by at least one text reference. The text reference must be to page number and edition. You may present your opinion but there must be some support from the material in this class. This is not about YOUR college campus but the Landry’s school.

Do not approach this assignment thinking that there is one chapter in the text that you can use in your discussion. It is wide opened! If you believe there is discrimination, describe it. But, you describe/discuss it in the context you choose. Is there an ethical issue? Or, maybe a tort or crime? It could possibly be a violation of the Civil Rights Act or the Constitution? It is possible you don’t see anything with the Landrys that raise any issues. Then go with that and, using any legal concept, say why not. Just remember to support your opinion with a text reference that is a page number and textbook edition.

There is no right or wrong answer. Can you follow instructions and use your critical thinking skill to produce a credible answer is the goal:)

You can listen to each piece you have chosen as many times as you want: the more you listen, the more you will understand the selection. In addition to describing what you hear about each selection, compare and contrast the two. For example, what musical components (ie tempo, instrumentation, texture, etc) are similar? How are they different? Would you expect to hear these two selections together in a performance? Lastly, provide some background information on both the composers and the composition.
