English 100 Smith Essay # 5 Assignment Essay 5 Final Draft due: MAY 25–midnight INSTRUCTIONS: Your final essay will represent the culmination of this course, requiring you to write a 6-8 page essay that combines literary interpretation and research. Importantly, your essay must focus on one of the stories we’ve read (or one of your choice). Your thesis much mention the story or an element of it. If you want to use your first essay as a starting point, then add research from your second essay into your discussion, you are permitted to do so (for most of you, this will be a prudent course). ***But you are also free to begin with another literary text, such as a children’s book or story you like, and then add research element to your discussion; or you might wish to write about a movie or TV show as well, adding research to that discussion. ASSSIGNMENT: Write an 6-8 page essay exploring a theme in a literary story, adding research where appropriate to your discussion. You must use at least 4 outside sources and conform to MLA guidelines for citing sources and using a Works Cited page. Importantly, research should enhance your literary analysis, not be the central focus. Your essay will necessarily include literary analysis and examples from your chosen story that supports your thesis (Essay #2), as well as research elements using MLA guidelines (Essay #3). Make sure to mention the story or an element of it in your thesis. Grading criteria: essay form and parts (intro., thesis, supporting paragraphs); use of specific examples and quotes; quality of research elements; MLA rules and guidelines; overall clarity and grammatical rules. IMPORTANT POINTS: Make sure to start with a thesis that focuses on the story: “The Things They Carried” reveals the psychological cost of war and the trauma many soldiers experience in combat. (Yes, you can use your Essay 1 thesis if you want—as well as some of the literary analysis you did). Focusing on your literary text, you should plan to find at least 3 points you want to make about the story that supports your thesis. For the above example, this might include: The weight the men carry and how they deal with it psychologically. Lt. Cross’s particular burden as a leader and how he carries the most weight. What Mary represents. How the men actually suffer from PTSD. 3. Do some pre-writing about these points, identifying specific examples from the story that support each point—and why they are important to your discussion. This pre-writing should be a stress-free “steam of consciousness” process. Sit at the computer and write about each point, one at a time, focusing on examples you will use, and how they relate your thesis. This is the sort of analysis you did in Essay one. This process may take a week! Spend a few days on each section. 4. Next you should think of how research and source materials can add to your discussion. Did Tim O’Brien serve in Vietnam? When and what were the causes of the Vietnam war? What is PTSD How was it manifested in soldiers from the war? 5. Now write and OUTLINE. This outline will be part of ESSAY 4. It might look something like this: EXAMPLE 1. INTRO—personal story about my own experience under gun fire. Thesis: “The Things They Carried” reveals the psychological cost of war and the trauma many soldiers experience in combat. 2. Overview of the story and how it generally relates to PTSD. 3. A brief history of the Vietnam War (research) and O’Brien’s service. 4. Many men in the story carry the weight of the war (my own analysis) a. Lavender’s death b. How various men react. 5. Lt. Cross’ special burden and how Martha represents his weight. 6. Lt. Cross’s condition is a metaphor for PTSD (he’s robbed love —my analysis) 7. What is PTSD? (research) 8. How did particularly affect soldiers in Vietnam? (research) 9. Cross is an emblem of the cost of war to veterans. (my analysis) 10. Conclusion. (return to personal story).
