Purpose: to begin learning about creating an essay using two or more sources (we call this synthesis). We will also begin working with citation and continue working on essay format.
Task: In high school, it is common to require students to take P.E. credits in order to graduate. At the local high school, the principal is considering adding yoga as a required unit in P.E. Write an essay to the school principal, persuading him or her of the benefits or dangers of yoga. You will use support from one or both of the readings in our text as well as at least one piece of outside support. Your goal is to get the principal to either add yoga or eliminate yoga from the P.E. class based on your argument. Don’t use assumptions or guesses—you need to be able to support your points.
If you use direct quotes from the book or your research, put them in quotation marks followed by a parenthesis with a page number from the book, or if it is from any research you do, put the last name of the author, or article title if no author, in parenthesis. (108) or (Smith) or (“Yoga for Health”)
When you are done, the letter will be around 1 ½ pages (and up to three pages) in MLA format.
