Case study 1

School A has a Facebook page that was set up by the Parents and Friends Association and the page has attracted a number of followers and commentators, including some of the teaching staff. Teacher B, new to the school at the start of the year, has joined.

In Term 2 the principal announces that, in future, students will be banned from running games, ball games, and the use of playground equipment before school as they need to be ready to learn and not tired and sweaty from play.

The decision, which Teacher B does not agree with, attracts negative comments on the Facebook page. This commentary begins with criticism of the decision but soon broadens to include other complaints about the school
and the principal overall. What advice would you give Teacher B?

Case study 2
Teacher D begins their teaching career in a largely self-contained community. Teacher D is encouraged to join in with local groups and activities such as sporting teams and local groups. While this helps Teacher D to fit in with the
community, it also raises some concerns. Wherever the teacher goes, there are students or teachers from the school. Teacher D becomes concerned about how to have a social life in the community, especially as the main social
outlet in the community is the local pub.

What would you do if you were Teacher D?

In responding to each scenario, you’ll need to:
1. Discuss the competing values underlying each issue.
2. Evaluate the range of possible actions available to the teacher in each scenario, indicating which is preferred.
? Discuss the implications for teaching practice of each issue (including discussion of which possible action is preferred, if indeed one is preferable).

You can use headings to indicate which scenario you’re responding to, but within your discussion of each you should write in academic prose. Your responses should be similar to the paragraphs of an essay, without the introduction and concluding paragraphs.
